filmlover
I’m looking forward to seeing who this year’s “surprise, bitch!” nominee is like when Lily Collins got nominated for that bomb two years ago. Saw The Playlist earlier predict Felicity Jones showing up which wouldn’t surprise me even though On the Basis of Sex feels like a total no1curr. SLAM!
I want Willem Dafoe to get a surprise nomination in Best Drama Actor for At Eternity's Gate. I want the actor (who is one of my favorites) to stay in the conversation, and I feel like a notable nomination such as that would increase the amount of people seeing that movie. Same with Ryan Gosling (First Man). I don't think that was a film that deserved to bomb.

I never saw Rules Don’t Apply (like everybody else lol) but she’s always come across as so bland in everything I’ve seen her in. Looking forward to seeing how she does with more challenging material like the role she has in that Zac Efron Ted Bundy movie premiering at Sundance next month though.

That movie feels small enough that they probably wouldn’t be predicting him if he weren’t the most likely runner-up last year. I could see them going with Hedges to make up for his snubbed two years ago for Manchester by the Sea. Or even Hugh Jackman despite that movie being a total flop. SLAM!
I'll give predicting a go. Best Picture, Drama BlacKkKlansman Can You Ever Forgive Me? First Man (I think they'll go for it) If Beale Street Could Talk A Star is Born alts: Black Panther, First Reformed, A Quiet Place Best Actor, Drama Bradley Cooper, A Star is Born Willem Dafoe, At Eternity's Gate Ryan Gosling, First Man Ethan Hawke, First Reformed Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody alts: Hedges, Jackman, Washington Best Actress, Drama Glenn Close, The Wife Toni Colette, Hereditary Viola Davis, Widows Lady Gaga, A Star is Born Melissa McCarthy, Can You Ever Forgive Me? alts: Aparicio, Kidman, Rosamund Pike Best Picture, Musical/Comedy Crazy Rich Asians Eighth Grade The Favourite Green Book Mary Poppins Returns alt: Vice (I think it'll miss on the basis that it's a 'comedy' by a larger stretch than the other selections, and after 2015 when The Martian won and last year with the Get Out fiasco, I think they'll ignore the tonally-dreary Vice to secure the Crazy Rich Asians nomination and avoid potential outcry from the public; the steak and potatoes audience will already be rallying behind Green Book and Mary Poppins in a more direct fashion anyways.) Best Actor, Musical or Comedy Christian Bale, Vice Lin Manuel Miranda, Mary Poppins Returns Viggo Mortensen, Green Book Robert Redford, The Old Man and the Gun Nick Robinson, Love, Simon alts: Cena (Blockers), Golding (CRA) Best Actress, Musical or Comedy Emily Blunt, Mary Poppins Returns Olivia Coleman, The Favourite Elsie Fisher, Eighth Grade Regina Hall, Support The Girls (why not) Constance Wu, Crazy Rich Asians alts: Hahn, Jones, Lively Best Supporting Actor Mahershala Ali, Green Book Russell Crowe, Boy Erased Adam Driver, BlacKkKlansman Sam Elliot, A Star is Born Richard E. The Favourite First Reformed Vice alt: Green Book, If Beale Streer Could Talk, Roma Best Animated Feature Dr. Seuss' The Grinch (because back in 2016, they did choose Sing over Finding Dory) Incredibles 2 Isle of Dogs Ralph Breaks The Internet Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse alts: Early Man, Mirai, Ruben Brandt, Smallfoot Best Foreign Feature Capernaum Cold War Happy as Lazarro Roma Shoplifters alts: Border, Burning, Girl,The Guilty, Museo Best Original Score The Favourite First Man Green Book If Beale Street Could Talk Mary Queen of Scots Best Original Song "All The Stars", Black Panther "The Place Where Lost Things Go", Mary Poppins Returns "Requiem for a Private War," A Private War "Revelation", Boy Erased "Shallow", A Star is Born alts: Free Solo, a 2nd MPR tune, RBG, Widows

Though to be fair, he would be a much better win than that how-did-that-happen? Aaron Taylor-Johnson win. It’ll likely be Ali as course correction though. I dunno, I feel like the Globes are gonna be hesitant about going all in for a clean sweep for a movie after the La La Land domination that helped accelerate the backlash (the “white savior” thinkpieces and so on didn’t really surface until after that ceremony occurred) that ended up leaving the movie bruised and bloodied by the time Oscar night came. Though this year is lacking in strong alternatives so maybe they’ll just go all in anyway.

filmlover
Also I’ve noticed some of the pundits are predicting Julia Roberts showing up in the Drama Actress category for Ben is Back to go along with her Homecoming nomination on the TV side, which sounds like something the Globes would do. Surprised nobody’s predicting Robinson in Actor Comedy/Musical though given his film was one of the more acclaimed (and more significant) major releases of the year and how flimsy that category is. Perhaps Love, Simon was too “teen” for the HFPA?
