Weekend Thread: Thursday Previews - Spider-Verse $3.5M | Mortal Engines $675K

Recommended Posts

Not that it necessarily means much, but Lanthimos-directed films have lackluster audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes (from worst to best):

Alps 51%

The Favourite 60%

The Killing of a Sacred Deer 63%

The Lobster 64%

Dogtooth 75%

Ironically the most inaccessible/off-putting work of his (Dogtooth) has the best audience score so far. I personally have only seen The Lobster, so difficult to assess his overall strengths/weaknesses, but on the basis of that he needs to work on his scripts more. To make sure they can be coherent/consistent from start to finish, especially within the context of a 2 hour feature film. The Lobster's first half is brilliant, but the second half is not only much worse but also feels like a completely different movie. Perhaps Lanthimos' instincts would be better served in short(er) films without the need to have a certain runtime. But am still interested in The Favourite. Just don't know if it'll come into my small town's cinema.

I’m not a huge Lanthimos fan, his movies never seem to really hit right with me (although I do appreciate them from a technical standpoint, but there’s never been one that’s excited me all that much) and I can definitely see why his movies don’t get glowing audience scores.

I’ll see the Favourite because of all the hype around it, but I’m trying to keep my personal expectations lower simply because it looks like it’ll be more of what I already know I didn’t care for too much.

Thanks, I had forgotten that. He usually films his own scripts but has now made an exception with The Favourite. Which makes the film perhaps even more interesting to assess.

Can we expect a smaller Monday drop than usual animated films since most of its audience weren’t families?

Probably a good bet I think

Anyone miss having a huge Star Wars movie in December? Next weekend should be pretty fun but I already miss the anticipation in the preceding weeks where we would count the seats sold for a Star Wars movie and wonder just how big it's going to be.

Also, @sfran43 is @terrestrial taking your job??

And the most colossal, big-budget flop of 2018 goes to Universal's $100M+ MORTAL ENGINES...which rolled out w/ just $7,559,850 in North America. Pretty sure the only engines Universal wants to rev up from now on is more FAST & FURIOUS sequels.

Maybe it's the factor of recency, but that list of nine really seems like one of the most notable foreign language shortlists I've seen; arrange any five (or any four + the guaranteed-a-nomination Roma), and you have what, in my opinion, looks like one of the most notable field of foreign language nominees in years. Even more notable than last year, which is saying something!

The audience RT score is the "how dare you making something else than the usual sappy-feel good blockbustery ending" :pcwhack:

The Shape of Water has a very clear ending/plot and it has just 74%.
