Better than Miley?

I don't know.  Miley is 4 years older.  She struck a different chord with aging bitter incels looking to shed insecurities.  I don't know how strong freshman in high school are these days with those kind of impressions and responses.  The information access that the children have, freedom to have non face-to-face arguments over the internet, etc. might have broken apart male/female rivalries in those schools and Miley's post 2010 appearance might have been digested differently

Top 10 in 2012 with the same calendar configuration

As mentioned previously, that year had three movies opening on the 25th too, which made a combined box office of about $390M.  Vice and Holmes & Watson ain't coming close to 390 this year, so there was a bit more of a rush or a need to catch stuff on the weekend before Christmas back in 2012.

Hobbits made another 152+m from the weekend before Xmas, about 4.12x from 36.9m. If AQ follows the trend, give it a 4x multiplier it should land at 276m. Thinking about 250-260m unless strong WoM pushes it to 275-280m.

Should be 102m by Xmas.

Preview = 9m

OD         = 19m

SAT        = 21.8m (-22%; +15%)

SUN       = 19.5m (-10.6%)

MON      = 10.6m (-45.5%)

TUE        = 17.3m (+63%)

OW 69.3m

OW with previews 74m

Christmas 101.9m

15-20% drop tomorrow seems like a safe bet.  I thought Aquaman would jump a bit more, but I guess that's the opening day effect for DC movies.

4.7 + [9.0 + 19] + 21.8 + 17.5-18.5 = 72-73

I watched it. Enjoyable enough but nothing amazing. Mid-200s is my guess from here, Rogue One legs.

Weak holidays is probably a result of a very strong Fall season.  Sept+Oct+Nov this year added up to $2534.9 million. Biggest year for those 3 months before this was 2012 with $2338.3 million.

Some nice self-reflection going on in here, which I think the guy from Free Solo could really benefit from because what in the name of god is he doing.

Did find the film really captivating though. And I'm never gonna complain about an hour and a bit of beautiful moving pictures of Yosemite.

There is so much sadness in this thread, am I at a funeral?  I really wouldn't hit the panic button yet until we see what Christmas (and Discount Tuesday) brings.  The cannibalism was to be expected, as was Aquaman being the more frontloaded of the movies.  I've been hearing raves about Bumblebee and Spider-Man: ITSV from my friends.  (I'm hoping to catch Bee tomorrow.) The woman at the museum I volunteer at said she'd been hearing "mixed" reviews about Poppins.  And I just keep hearing that Aquaman is FUN!

Not to jump on the "Jumanji Legs" bandwagon, but I don't see how Bee and Poppins don't have solid runs through January.  I also think the lack of MoviePass is really killing the inflated DOMs we saw in the first half of the year.  And in this month, when you have SO MANY options, it's gonna be really evident.

My mom dragged me to MPR again today.  The screening was about half full, and it has a good range of families and adults.  The five-ish year old girl next to me was adorable, and hella engaged.  She also kept trying to talk to me.  Very cute.  My mom was like, "I want one" and then tried to bribe me with "you can dress her up in superhero costumes and princess dresses", and I just looked at her like, "We've been over this for ten years, you have four other grandkids, I'm not giving you one more."

I wanna see that movie so bad, especially since I used to rock climb so much [albeit at a wall, and not free solo at all]

Yes.

Way too early to see the effect of Christmas legs on movies opening this weekend.

Jumanji, PP3 and TGS all had disappointing OW but great legs.

Our local school districts have moved the 2nd week of vacation to the week after Christmas instead of the week before.  I wonder if that is common

Went to see Aquaman today.

Visually astounding. Action scenes were amazing. Wan is a master of his craft. Script needed another look at though. Dialogue was abysmal at times. But a fun movie. Saw it in IMAX. Theater was really full and out of the theaters I usually go to, I never expect this one to have sellouts.

Using 23.0 ow MP needs about 8.4x the FSS in addition to 8.8 it did on Wed and Thu to cross 200,

8.8 + 23.0 * 8.5 = 202.0

Using 22.5 ow BB needs about 6.7x to hit 150.

Using 69 ow AQM needs about 3.6x (same as HOBBIT1) in addition to 4.7 pre-previews to cross 250

4.7 + 69.0 * 3.6 = 253.1
