Artists don't make a lot of money off music, or at least can't rely on it to pay their bills.

They mostly get money from touring (still music related) or endorsements. We see high profile artists releasing new music as an excuse to tour again (like Madonna, Beyonce, Taylor Swift) or to keep their name somewhat relevant for their perfumes/makeups/clothing lines (Britney, Rihanna, JLo, Katy Perry, etc)

Also, labels keep pushing upcoming artists so they can keep paying them pennies, which they wouldn't be able to do to a household name. It sucks but that's how the industry works now.

That article is just talking about it is a strange time between the chart success and waiting for the checks to come, never indicating how big or small they will be, artist do not make a lot of money off streamed music, almost none from youtube.

But huge album sellers did made a lot of money from musics and the very few that still exist still do (there is just almost none of them by now). There was even a middle class of recording musician in the 90s.

That's very true. Most artists don't make a dime on music sales.

What they need is a songwriting credit on a perennial hit. Mariah Carey makes a lazy $4 million a year just from "All I Want For Christmas Is You".

4 is not enough and that being generous. the album is quite basic and uninspired and doesn’t hold a candle to the amazingness that was The Greatest Showman soundtrack.

Wow I agree. I’m a huge Lady Gaga fan but honestly ASIB is so tired and basic. It sounds like shitty versions of songs we have heard before. No wonder her career is over :(

Umm, TGS soundtrack amazing? What? The "soundtrack" for that was the same shit I crap on the radio every day. Even the intentionally shitty pop songs in A Star is Born (Hair, Body, Face and Why did You do That?) were better than the unintentionally awful pop songs in TGS.

Like I get that we are talking about opinions but I don't understand how A Star is Born soundtrack is "basic and uninspired" but TGS's isn't.

I have both CDs which I bought for my wife, I have to say, I find ASIB soundtrack as dull as dishwater compared to TGS.

But the wife seems to like it.

After the last 3-day weekend of 2018 has now passed and has actuals(ish), I can now reveal the lists of box office results for movies when they were only in the DOM top 5 during, what is now, last year (happy New Year, everyone). These lists includes preview numbers, even for movies whose previews landed on Tuesdays or Wednesdays; however, the weekend numbers are 3 day only. I feel like this could be the one decent metric to compare not just how much a film makes on weekends alone, but it's somewhat of an odd way to see what would happen if movies didn't have outside factors like weekdays and seasons of the year boosting their results vs. other movies with similar weekend results (I mean, I know that's not entirely true, but it's just a "what if" scenario anyway).

Movies in Italic are 2017 films that continued their run in 2018; in Bold, the movies in the final weekend top 5 of 2018.

I'm guessing Vice isn't even going to break even with those sort of numbers and that sort of budget. Annapurna very likely fucked up the last chance they had with making profitable movies. They showed have lowered the budget for Vice and focused their marketing on Beale Street which could have made much more than Vice if marketed well. Wouldn't be surprised if they close down after Missing Link (which will flop too because it is stop motion animation). Even Larry Ellison couldn't fix the damn company because of the dumb mistakes made by his daughter. Too bad. They had an amazing run making amazing films.

"They should have lowered the budget for Vice", you say this as if you simply push a button and suddenly the budget is lower. Yes, Megan Ellison has been said to spend too much on films but some films have a fixed cost and have to be made for said budget. Haven't seen the film yet but from the trailers, I guess I can see how it cost that much because it seems pretty sprawling.

Making films is fucking expensive, Captain Obvious I know but you'd be surprised how much some films do cost even when they seem tiny (I know from experience). Some people often go "damn, why was that that expensive", there's usually a very good reason. Vice might reach 50-60 M, I'm not sure it'll make a dent overseas but I guess it could manage an 80 million WW take, perhaps 100 M, it had a pretty good debut in Australia, we'll see.

Also, in what universe would If Beale Street Could Talk make more money than Vice? It's probably going to be one of those classic "strong PTA in limited release, fizzles out quickly in wider release" cases, I guess it'll finish around 12 million or something domestic and I doubt it'll have any traction overseas.

In what universe Vice "might reach 50-60 M"? That would be VERY surprising considering its disastrous first week-end.
