STXfilms release of Lantern Entertainment’s The Upside drew $1.1M last night from 7PM shows at 2,460 theaters. The Kevin Hart-Bryan Cranston remake of the French hit film The Intouchables will play at 3,080 locations starting today with an eye on $10M-$14M

Also as a comparison, Hidden Figures had $1.2M for previews when it went to wide release. That led to a $22.8M weekend. That movie had Oscar buzz and rave WOM, while Upside has more mixed reviews. But on the other hand, Hidden Figures' weekend had major snowstorms IIRC. Basically, whether Aquaman fourpeats or not is still up in the air at this point.

The budget for the Upside is $30-$35 million plus they spent quite a bit on advertising.

The budget get for the dog movie is only $18 million and Replicas is $30 million.

Dog is is probably the only one who ends up breaking even.

Mojo write-up https://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=4474&p=.htm

FRIDAY AM UPDATE: STXFilms's The Upside is off to a strong start, bringing in $1.1 million from Thursday previews, outperforming the likes of Wonder ($749k from previews) and The Intern ($650k in previews). In fact, the performance is just ahead of star Kevin Hart's Ride Along, which brought in $1.06 million in previews before debuting with over $14 million back in mid-January 2014.

Sony's A Dog's Way Home took in $535,000 from previews beginning at 5PM in 2,657 locations. While Sony is still saying they expect a $9-10 million debut, this performance is actually ahead of the $455k in previews A Dog's Purpose brought in from previews before debuting with $18.2 million back in January 2017.

Lastly, Entertainment Studios's Replicas grossed $200,100 in previews from 1,630 locations with showings beginning at 7PM. This trails previews for The Lazarus Project ($344k), Self/less ($325k) and Transcendence($850k).

We'll take a closer look at things tomorrow morning once Friday estimates come in. For now you can check out our weekend preview below.

Ride Along is not as optimistic a comp for Upside as Mojo makes it out to be. 4 years back it did 1.06m previews and 14m weekend. Today doing 1.1 previews would give a much smaller weekend all things being equal.

Dog's Way Home as a good shot at 15m comparing with A Dog's Purpose from last year.

But RA2 makes sense as a comp

STX definitely didn't finance it though. They got the rights from Weinstein, and I doubt for something like 30-35M. I doubt they're going to lose anything from this.

It's definitely a typo. Ride Along did 40M opening weekend...
