3RD UPDATE, Friday 11:39PM: In a slow weekend, STXfilms is reaping the box office spoils with The Upside on course to make $19.3M, which would rep the studio’s first No. 1 opening title since launching its theatrical arm in August 2015.

Rivals have often knocked STX for improperly dating their titles. Well, who is laughing now?

STX’s distribution of Lantern’s Upside is unexpectedly beating Warner Bros/DC’s Aquaman at this point in time, which is looking at a fourth weekend of $15.5M, -50%, and the Neil Burger-directed dramedy is over-indexing its industry tracking ($10M-$14M) significantly. Some rival studio projections think the film could even hit $20M. Upside easily won today, propped by $1.1M previews, with $7Mover Aquaman‘s fourth Friday which earned $4.5M.

Sony/Bona’s Film A Dog’s Way Home is coming in third with $11.2M, a meh result for a movie that cost $18M.

Focus Features’ wide break of On the Basis of Sex is looking at $6M at 1,923 theaters.

Replicas has sparked out with $2.4M and a C CinemaScore.

I wonder how leggy The Upside could be. The original in France had something close to 15x if I remember right.

Intouchable was a a phenomenon. Praised  by critics and audience alike it opened huge then went on to become the 3rd highest grossing movie of all of time in France right below Avatar.

the Upside will be fine but don’t expect it to duplicate that success

If follow JR, fish boy will be at 14.6m.

With premium formats for the last weekend, 15.5m seems low.

ITSV set to beat MPR. Who saw that coming as recently as 1st half of December. MPR doing 3x ITSV seemed more likely than going under back then.

Thinking 175 for ITSV, 165 for MPR, 125 for BB

There's a chance that AQM beats ITSV + MPR = 340 but it needs the actuals to be above that 15.5 Deadline estimate by a couple.

Holy shit that Poppins drop. $170m finish seems unlikely now tbh

Below TGS, despite opening x-hundred% above it.
