My only real thought at this point is that Kris Tapley is starting to sound the alarm big time that Cold War is probably getting nominated.

I will say this year feels WILD compared to most years, though last year was a little bit wild too with Phantom Thread/Darkest Hour surprisingly coming in strong and  I Tonya/Big Sick missing out. Looking at the prediction thread from last year, those two show up alot more than Darkest Hour and Phantom Thread. Of course I was a big dummy that zigged while everyone zagged and put Florida Project in my predictions.

This year is probably the least exciting race in years given some of the films in contention (Green Book, Bohemian Rhapsody, Vice - none of which will be making my BOFFY ballot in any form other than Bale in Actor) have no business being mentioned among the best of the year. Gonna be the weakest lineup since the expansion happened a decade ago IMO.

Hopefully the announcement of the nominees is less messy than it’s been the past few years.

I'll be very surprised if Best Picture is anything other than Vice, Beale Street, Favourite, Star is Born, Green Book, Bohemian Rhapsody.

What else could really be included besides maybe Black Panther, Quiet Place. The only reason I don't say Roma is bc I'm still not clear about if it's considered for Foreign or BP. Or both?

Though I am pulling that the Academy is so desperate for relevance that they put in Spiderverse.

I am more than happy to see BR get in, finally Oscar got less elite, when a drama of non-visual/action packed extravaganza get 800m worldwide through insane legs, it is pretty obvious audience loves it.

When now people have a thought of drama was not for the big screen, BR shows the market is not dying for mid-budget drama.  And we can once and for all, kill the chance of revival of the idea of best popular film

Perhaps it's because I'm miffed that Widows has fizzled out completely or that The Favourite still hasn't opened anywhere within a 2.5-hour drive of me (and I still have to see Beale Street, though that one's at least at a shopping center that's an hour-and-a-half drive away), but I'm strangely unexcited about nomination announcement this year.

I'm rooting hard for A Star Is Born and Roma - currently my top two films of last year - to run the table.

I'm not going to shed any tears if Black Panther isn't nominated for BP.

It made money. It's a cultural phenomenon. In 10 years, no one but people like us are going to care what it was nominated for.

Too bad it seems Disney has whiffed out again when it seemed like they had two Best Picture contenders on their hand two months ago but they make so much money annually that I doubt they care.

I am still surprised at how MPR fell off the face of Awards-Earth besides maybe a song and actress (Which are still big, but).
