Man, I was really looking forward to the second trailer for Tenet right around this time... The main trailer for July Nolan films always comes in this first week of May.

I thought WB releases 2nd trailers a month before the movie releases these days.

Nolan's films haven't really followed WB's standard operating procedures though, we saw that with the theater exclusive teaser being pushed a year ahead of release.

This is their most expensive movie of 2020

Yeah, can't see how they would choose streaming over a delay if the worst happens and the July date is no longer an option.

Especially after all the statements in support of theatrical, Nolan would be completely pissed and if WB burn that bridge, it will be a hard hit for them.

Yep. Nolan's arguably their most valuable brand right now too.

Otherwise if flops, will WB still give another 200million in future for Nolan then?

Wachowski's got Jupiter Ascending after Speed Racer imploded and Villeneuve is getting Dune after BR 2049, all at WB (2049 was a Sony co-production though), so probably.

And Zack Snyder got to lead their 2nd biggest IP after The Legend of Ga'Hoole and Sucker Punch flopped. This is like saying Pixar won't make another original film because Onward flopped.

FYI - if theaters are open, people are going to go. This whole thing where everyone stays home forever is hilarious. 95% of people will be pouring out of their homes ala China post-lockdown. Hell, there are a lot of people out RIGHT NOW...

I really wish miracle happens for Nolan and the box office of Tenet. Soft opening, long legs for months? Otherwise if flops, will WB still give another 200million in future for Nolan then?

Nolan will still get the budgets he wants. No one will pin this movie eventual underperformance on him. All major studios would be willing to give him whatever budgets he needs. He's a dream director for a major studio. Always delivers movies on time and on budget. Always gets great critical and commercial results. No one is safer than Nolan

I kind of agree with this. Not that people SHOULD. But a lot of people WILL (not everyone, but a lot).

No way, not going to happen. First of all, there is ample polling showing this is not correct. More importantly, though, we have the performance of films in very early March to prove that people won't go out if they don't feel safe. Outward bombed not because of lockdowns, but because people wouldn't go to theaters even before they were closed.

I know Nolan really wants to hold the line and bring theaters back, but the reality is this summer is just not likely to be the time to do it. Even if the theaters are open, crowds will be sparse. It is not a given they'll even be open. He'd be better served letting the date slide.

is it better for this movie to come out in its current date in July when the first wave of the virus is way past its peak. or wait out until October or December and risk coming out in the middle of the 2nd wave in the fall? this might be a reason why WB would want to stick with this date but probably not.

I'm pretty sure polling would also say that people would not go to beaches eventhough we have actually seen people line up at beaches as soon as they open. Also this poll by THR says 22% but almost half say they'd more comfortable going if cinemas take safety measures which is going to be a huge selling point when cinemas reopen.

And Onward bombed because shit started to hit the fan once celebrities started getting the virus and cinemas did shutdown on its 2nd week. It would have bombed regardless because of its low OW but I doubt it could have added more than 10% to its OW if COVID didn't exist. We cannot compare the reaction to the pandemic at the start of it to the reaction later on.
