Good movie, but strictly for manga/anime fans. Hence, frontloaded as hell. Box-office wise, sadly a flop.

Gauging alita's legs will be tough due to it's unusual release date. At 85.5 it will have a 3x multiplier off FSS but that's cause it burnt off demand on Thu with a solid 8.7m - even TF5 technically enjoys a 3x multi because of Wed od and Thu are not part of ow but are part of dom.

Subtracting Thu from dom will give it a multiplier of 2.7x at 85.5 dom which is not bad. However, folks will be right to argue that some of that 8.7m would have shifted to FSS with a Friday od and maybe it's 3-day would have been higher by say 4.5-5.5 at 33-34, just guesstimating. Using the hypothetical 33-34 FSS, 86-88 dom will give it 2.6x multi down from 2.7x calculated earlier. Still not horrible for the genre. But it's bad cause God James was gonna help leg Alita big time (like Upside for example, a genuine 5x+ multi movie after a Fri od) and get it as close to it's high budget as possible.

Green Book and Spider-Man are coming back to a lot of theaters around here this weekend. The former is also opening at theaters that didn't get it before. Imagine Universal's giving it a massive bump this weekend to take advantage of the Oscar glory and the quiet marketplace.

Are we sure Alita will pass 80 mil? Because if we are using @a2k's numbers for the rest of the week and the weekend, Jumper should start outpacing Alita in terms of total gross at that point (end of third weekend) and that film only managed 80 million.

Edit: sorry. Forget what I said. I thought jumper reached 72 mil on its third weekend but it reached that number on its fourth. But still, Jumper made 7.6 mil on its third weekend while Alita won't even make 7. So, I feel like the gap between both will get smaller and smaller.

With my guesstimates the cume by Sunday will be 71.1 after a 6.2 weekend (-50%).

JUMPER added a poor 1.77x it's 3rd weekend more to the run which gives ALITA 71.1 + 6.2*1.77 = 82.1

ALITA's legs post 3rd weekend may not better JUMPER as CM will take away audience and premium screens the following week. But don't see it missing 80 dom unless this weekend's drop is closer to 55% than 50%.

If it holds well to a 45% drop instead then JUMPER's legs give 71.8 + 6.8*1.77 = 83.9

ALITA will need 2.0x instead of 1.77x more to cross 85 dom even with a good drop.
