Think about superhero films that become indelible in pop culture beyond being mere box office hits: Avengers, Iron Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, Wonder Woman, Black Panther, Spider-Man, Superman the Movie, Batman 1989, The Dark Knight... and then think hard about CM, and you will understand. It's just an entertaining popcorn film, and nothing more (the fact that Carol is not a very interesting character and that Brie, while a solid actress, did not exactly light up the screen in this role did not help. Well, she did light up the screen, literally 😉 , but you know what I mean). I certainly hope  that Endgame Russoes her, like how Infinity War Russoed Dr. Strange, who also had a mediocre solo film but shone brightly under the Russos' guidance.

Just speaking anecdotally and from what I've seen online, I think there's a rather large gap in the response to this film between the male and female audience.

 

A lot of men are just like: "Meh, this is just another origin story.  Seen it all before."

 

Women, meanwhile: "Holy shit is this film ever capturing my experience and what it means to exist as a woman in its depiction of Carol!"

 

I really do think it's (maybe) the first big-budget superhero film specifically aimed at a female audience and told from a female perspective.  And I, for one, hope Marvel continues doing this sort of thing -- especially now that both BP and CM have proven how enormously financially viable taking that route is.

Imo it was bad in comparison to CM. I was more referring to objectively horrendous reviews. Definitely worse than Suicide Squad.

Yet Wonder Woman’s audience skewed more female than male while CM skewed more male than female.I have personally seen as much females not liking or feeling meh about CM as males. Also I have seen males say they really enjoyed and liked CM  just like I’ve seen women say that.

Grading CM on such a high scale is stupid. Was it the best MCU film, imo not even close. However it was nowhere near the worst and anything in the middle is good. People took their negative bias into the film, simple as that.

You are part of the 29% percent of audiences or what we like to call the minority, hell maybe you are one of the critics who gave it bad scores and later got salty. 81% of audiences did love us though. Higher further faster than your typical mcu film

It did 213 million in the US, it was saved by China's weird love for it. I will never understand it. Suicide Squad made nearly the same amount account for inflation.

 

Also I don't dislike it, it's better than Justice League. Just seems like if people can like Venom they have a low enough bar to like CM.

I have not heard a single woman personally say anything about CM mirroring their lives or being an awesome moviegoing experience. IN fact, I have heard many a lady call it "ok" or "meh. It was alright," while I heard nothing but raves for WW from my female acquaintances, friends, and associates (also some of them actually cried in the theater while watching the film. Those media reports about lots of femalse crying during screenings of Wonder Woman was no joke. WW was a pop culture moment and an important cinematic event (sociologically speaking); it makes sense that it became that.

CM, on the other hand,  is just a competently made box office hit from the MCU machine (and there's nothing wrong with that).

No question in my mind that Wonder Woman was better than Captain Marvel. CM is easier to watch, not near as slow but not as emotional for me.
