I kind of agree. Just have a hard time seeing this making so much less than Beauty and the Beast when the original Aladdin was more popular than the original Beauty

It was significantly more popular on release (made more a the box office held record on home video until Lion King dethroned it), but in continuous fandom ?

Beauty and the Beast was re-released 2 time since, made 25m in Imax release 2002 while Aladdin 2003 release was cancelled, 47m in 2012 and was second to only Avatar in bluray sales in 2010 according to wikipedia/this:

https://www.the-numbers.com/home-market/bluray-sales/2010

Aladdin 2003 release did seem to have done quite well.

It could go down with the preposition also, has much has popularity, how exactly similar and how much it give the impression that it will satisfied / augment your Nostalgia and go and hurt your memories instead.

Speaking of re-releases, one of the theaters is playing The Simpsons Movie in a couple of weeks with a $5 admission, and I'm hyped to see it again (if school doesn't get in the way).

Is it actually a flop though? No production budget, don't really need to spend on new marketing. Maybe a few TV spots here and there, but it's really just a bit of free money for them.

Isn't it mostly when not completely free for them to let theater play their old movies and they just collect the money ?

I mean how much money does a studio pay per theatre??? the studio could use those screens for another one of their movies which would give them more money? because i'd understand re-releasing an old classic in 100 theatres but CI was sent to 708 and the PTA is $40....

I actually DID watch CI on theatres in 1999, this is so depressing lol

But that is not an 4 quadrant GA movie (beside, I'd say mostly into, with the occasional side-step)

You did a post with chart per year copied into with color coding certain numbers. I tried to use the same method in the answer, tried to shorten the quote, so the post might end less than a kilometer long, but somehow that did not wok - it grew instead with epmty places not removieable. Was very strange.

Us is going to outgross most "4 quadrant" tentpoles this year.

It's rare to get a full scale re-release these days. Most times it's a single screening, or shown for a couple of days. When I was in LA last year, me and a few of the guys here saw Jurassic Park at a fathom event, and it was really busy. That's just easy money for the studios now.

It's cheaper to do a one day event. I think the only successful wide rereleases in recent time was The Lion King 3D and Titanic 3D.

A proper Star Wars (as in: A New Hope) re-release would do gangbusters. It probably wouldn't be as huge on balance as the 1997 special edition - which was one of the ten highest-grossing domestic releases of that year and held the January opening record for 11 years - but I think viewers would definitely show up.

By the way, now that’s it’s been out a bit, Kong: Skull Island seems to be a great CM comp. Cumes as a multiple of opening week:

Kong:

14 day — 1.465

21 day — 1.711

24 day — 1.8165

CM

14 day — 1.455

21 day — 1.693

24 day (with 20.4M wknd estimate) — 1.796

Following Kong’s 3rd week multi would get to 401, but I think it’ll come in a tad higher thanks to Endgame bump.

Bolded parts are Disney's deliberate decisions. I was a kid who was the perfect TG during the zenith of the Renaissance Era. In the 90's, Disney was generating far more Aladdin content and media than for BatB (arguably the best Disney spin-off animated series, sidescroller game, VG games, 2 DTV sequels).

Then 9/11 happened. And Aladdin merch/content reduced in number. That's when I guess Disney realised they needed to highlight BatB too (seeing how it was the only animated BP nominee after all). This also coincided with Belle's rising prominence in marketing thanks to the early 00's then fledgling but instantly popular Disney Princess brand. So it made sense to better position her franchise.

Maybe they are testing it for EG OW
