Alternatively, maybe Newt isn't the right protagonist for the story they actually want to tell.

As much as I want to shout from the rooftops how great of a character Newt Scamander is, I think this statement holds merit. The application of Newt was great in the first film. I think, for the next film, they need to figure out where Newt really stands in the film. As it stands now, it's hard to say where Newt stands in the scheme of things. It's never a good sign when a franchise struggles with the protagonist. The fact that they're fumbling with a great protagonist is even more of a shame. Hopefully, they get their act together.

Lol what? The first movie made 800 million, the second one made around 650 million despite disappointing reviews/word of mouth.  If you personally don't care about these movies then thats your prerogative but to claim that absolutely nobody does is just plain nonsense.

Crimes of Grindelwald was still the 10th highest grossing movie of the whole year.

See Dark Phoenix/Godzilla King of the Monsters/Terminator Dark Fate

the gross implies that nobody does care. sorry.

Which is about Crimes of Grindelwald and not the next Fantastic Beasts movie. A movie that grosses $653 million isn't an implication that "nobody cares"

True, but that is still really underperforming for a film set in the Harry Potter universe.

It is an underperformance for sure, it would've made more had the reactions been better, but we are not talking Solo levels here.

As long as Warner Bros. and friends keep the budgets as such where $600 million worldwide is an uncontested win, then they might as well roll the dice. The key difference/advantage for Fantastic Beasts is that there remains a big and hungry fan base for the J.K. Rowling Wizarding World properties. The Universal theme parks, and the ongoing popularity of the original books/movies prove that.

The big question is whether Warner Bros. is in a position to weather a box office bomb in this franchise in the hopes that an improved third installment will lead to healthier returns for the fourth one. After all, had Warner Bros. just given up on DC after Justice League, they wouldn’t be reaping the rewards of Aquaman ($1.155 billion) and Joker ($950 million as of yesterday).

650 is a tragic number let's not. If the trend continues the next one will do 400. Newt is an awful character and so are his friends. That's just tea.

did a quick run through with FB2 for the first time,

here is the most condensed form for me to rate movies in the stratosphere out of 100 points

starting with movies from my signature

79+19 = 98 - Batman Begins

80+18 = 98 - Blade Runner

80+18 = 98 - Fight Club

80+17 = 97 - TMNT

80+12 = 92 - The Shining

80+16 = 96 - Sorcerer's Stone (2001)

80+16 = 96 - Chamber of Secrets (2002)

79+18 = 97 - Prisoner of Azkaban

(diagnosis - "advantageous movies" from Hogwarts that give the audience greater advantages when the characters get older)

79+18 = 97 - Goblet of Fire

79+18 = 97 - Order of the Phoenix

79+17 = 96 - Half-Blood Prince

79+17 = 96 - DH1

79+18 = 97 - DH2

80+13 = 93 - FB1

79+16 = 95.5 - FB2

That the problem. The charecters in the new films are simply not as good as in the original trilogy. It is interesting that it's the younger version of  charecters in the original novels that people really liked in the prequels.

They're probably going to shoot one scene and then say, "Welp, it's pandemic season, time to delay." And I say they'll at least try to shoot something because this franchise is on shaky ground, and someone might find incentive to cancel the production entirely if it doesn't start shooting. But if they get a few scenes in, that's going to mean they can't cancel the film. Once shooting starts, there's an obligation to the talent to get the film made in its entirety. So they're going to allow the cameras to roll for a very brief period of time, and then they'll reconvene at another time. I might've said some of the dumbest things ever...
