New Line/DC’s Shazam! is shooting toward an estimated $4M-$4.4M tonight from shows starting at 4PM, a result that’s around what Captain America: First Avenger made ($4M off shows starting at midnight back in 2011, $25.7M Friday, $65M opening) and higher than Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse ($3.5M from 5PM shows, $12.7M Friday, $35.3M opening). As we always note, these figures come from Deadline sources, not Warner Bros.

Also opening this weekend is Paramount’s closing night film from SXSW, the latest rendition of Stephen King’s Pet SemataryEarly buzz is that Thursday night showtimes which kicked off at 7PM are earning an estimated $2M+ per industry sources. Again those numbers could fluctuate.

Though comparing the number to Captain America's number way way back in 2011 is shockingly useless!

You say that like DHD doesn't normally put weird/bad analysis in their early weekend write-ups.

About expected for both.

Even take out the release dates one film started previews at midnight while the other started at 4pm.

Well, it would be nice if it climbed closer to 5, but whatever ... expecting that will have close to 45 total (including the 3.3 special screenings) after Sunday.  In other words, probably pretty close to tracking.  Disappointing, but not unexpected.  Just couldn't break out in this crazy window ... but the movie is awesome, so hopefully people spread good word of mouth in US/Canada.

4PM? What the fuck?!

These studios are just too much, keep getting more and more ridiculous with these Thu releases.

At this rate, soon we’ll be like UK and have 7-day Opening weekend lol.

Maybe it'll get to the point where a movie's entire run is it's "Opening Weekend". A Multiplier of 1.

I've always said on here that most people,  casual moviegoers don't want to see "good movies" in the theater.   They want a spectacle.

If a movie just so happens to be a spectacle but also good then that's fine too.  Shazam tried to bring back the 80s and early 90s family vibe into the comic world but that doesn't sell in this era.

Even Spiderverse which ended up having a great multiplier,  most casual moviegoers didn't care how great it was.

$4m for Shazam would be pretty poor.

(And a shame too since IMO it's the best DCEU film so far)

Not following.

Its over 7 million actually with the added $3.3 million from its screening. Why are people not adding those. Of course that sucked out some of its preview juice because people could watch it earlier there.

I do think when analyzing this it should be considered how much prior demand was burnt off by Fandago. The difference with this and Aquaman is you had to be a Prime member to get the Aquaman screenings ((And iirc you can't just sign up for Prime just the showings)). Meanwhile Fandango was open to everybody.

Because the studio reports it as a separate day.  That's really about it.

It's also easier to figure out comparable multiples for the w/e if you separate early previews out

Shazam had two showings, how many showings did the $2.8m AQM chunk have?

Aquaman had two at my theater but I think it varied based on which theater.

Hope Shazam can have a solid opening otherwise good legs are going to mean too much. I mean being optimistic and giving it 4x legs on a 45 opening would only get it to 180, plus doesn’t seem to be doing too good overseas.

This is sucks because the film is pretty great.
