My box office hopes:

 

It might be surprising, but I'm counting on Psyren to be New Journey Pictures' highest grosser when it comes out in June. I figure it'd be a fun genre film for Summer audiences and I do want to raise the budget for the sequel.

 

Not sure how Yin is gonna do. Placed it in early August as an homage to The Sixth Sense. Hopefully there's a scenario where it captures audience synergy and manages to gross above $100M, even if it's by a hair.

 

The lowest I can see Veggies going is $22M, which I think was the gross for the Jonah film from 2002. But the highest I can see it go is a total in the low-80-millions, which was achieved by Heaven is for Real and I Can Only Imagine.

 

Vice is a good comparison for Sabrina, but it could do considerably lower without Oscar nominations.

 

I'm expecting Wii Sports to flop, though.

 

It's going to be interesting to see how my films do. A lot of them aren't really films that get wide releases very often, so there's definitely an air of mystery.

January 1-3: Alex Spark, Kuzco, George Washington and Y4 company  reign in the New Year

It’s no surprise that, once again, the New Year was welcomed in with strong holdings from the Holiday season leftovers. ‘Spark: Beyond the Sky’, ‘Kingdom of the Sun’, and ‘Fortnight’ all continue to chug along on their strong runs. Meanwhile, the new Ariana Grande 3D concert film was mostly ignored by moviegoers, except for die-hard fans of the singer who gave the film an A cinemascore. The first official film of Y5 grossed a middling $9.6 million at the box office, enough to secure itself a 4th place position beehind the three holdovers though its legs are sure to drop off from here. January 8-10: ‘Hostel 3’ lodged into third, ‘Spark’/’Fortnight’ top

‘Hostel: Bloodline’ posted solid returns with a $19.6 million opening though it was not enough to dethrone ‘Spark 3’ or ‘Fortnight’ from the top 2 spots. The third film in Eli Roth’s body horror trilogy managed to secure a first place win on its opening day Friday but as expected, it fell sharply from there. Those who saw the horror sequel gave the film a C cinemascore, in line with the ratings that the film’s predecessors received over a decade ago.

January 15-18: The Box Office Constellations line up for ‘Galileo’, ‘Wi-Fi Winnebago’

The constellations managed to line up for this year’s MLK holiday openers as ‘Life of Galileo’ managed to fit in line with opening expectations, posting a solid $39.6 million for the 4-day weekend. Marking the third collaboration between Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, audiences turned in by the numbers mostly thanks to a strong showing from female moviegoers who made up 59 percent of the film’s audience, who gave the film a B cinemascore. Meanwhile, ‘Wi-Fi Winnebago’ managed to find bandwidth among general audiences as well, opening in the high-end of expectations with $20.6 million at the box office. The Amy Schumer led comedy posted a B+ cinemascore with female moviegoers also making up most of the audience for the film (55 percent). Meanwhile, ‘Fortnight’ and ‘Spark’ continue their strong runs in the heat of Oscar season.

January 22-24: The MLK Top 5 repeat while ‘The Study’ fails the Box Office test (Oscar Noms Announced)

Proving to be a fairly quiet opening weekend, last weekend’s Top 5 headers repeated in their positions while this weekend’s lone opening film ‘The Study’ failed miserably in bringing in audiences. The Joseph Gordon-Levitt directed horror film managed to only muster up a measly $5.7 million. Those who did see the film, however, were not impressed, awarding the film a D+ cinemascore. On a more positive note, ‘Fortnight’ and ‘Spark 3’ managed to hold strong following their respective Best Picture nominations. We expect the two films, especially the former, to hold up well in the coming weeks.

January 29-31: ‘Washington holds down the ‘Fort’ while newcomers come up short.

Following last week’s Oscar nominations, ‘Fortnight’ managed to only drop -15.8% from the previous weekend, securing its first #1 spot on the chart in its 6th weekend of release. The Steven Spielberg war film has proven to be both a hit with the critics and the audiences and its success is certainly well deserved. Meanwhile, the crime/thriller ‘Headline’ posted a second place finish with $11.6 million, a decent enough opening considering its lack of major stars and a middling marketing push. The film received an A- cinemascore. However, this weekend’s other opener, the crime/comedy ‘Kaleidoscope’, faired worse only managing to scrounge up $6.3 million and posting a B- cinemascore.

I'm pleasantly surprised by Wi-Fi Winnebago's moderately successful counter-programming! The film's tripled its production budget with these January weekends alone!

February 5-7: ‘Vegas’ scores mediocre lottery, ‘Dolly’ puts on its sunday clothes

Despite headlining the weekend box office, ‘Next Vegas’ failed to win much of a lottery scoring $12.8 million. The $30 million Sci-Fi thriller will have to post decent legs from here if it plans to make much a decent profit. The film posted a B+ cinemascore. Elsewhere, the filmed version of ‘Hello, Dolly!’ managed to pull in a decent crowd on yet another slow winter weekend, posting $7.9 million. Since it was a filmed show, a cinemascore was not given. ‘Fortnight’ also continued playing strong, posting $9.1 million for the weekend.

February 12-15: ‘Medusa’ conjures up a monster opening weekend while ‘Perfect Match’ thrills Valentine audiences

Thanks to a market deprived of animated films, it's no surprise that Endless Animations’ ‘Medusa’ was going to post a huge opening but almost no one expected it would make a monstrous $100 million on its 4 Day opening weekend, helping to bring the box office out of its current slouch. The animated musical also managed to achieve an A cinemascore and should hold well for several weeks to come given that March is completely empty of animated films. Meanwhile ‘Perfect Match’ managed to serve as great counter-programming, also exceeding expectations with a $51.1 million 4 Day opening. The sci-fi thriller received an A- cinemascore from audiences, who went to the film in droves on Valentine’s Day, also helping Medusa to breathe some life back into the box office.

Considering the amount of crime thrillers that have populated the winter marketplace, it figured that one of them would end up getting the short-end of the stick and it seems ‘The Poet’ ended up being the one. The film received a B- cinemascore. ‘Medusa’ and ‘ Perfect Match’ both managed to repeat in the top 2 spots respectively, posting strongholds in their sophomore weekends.

February 26-28: ‘ByteRealm’ immerses audiences into virtual fantasy

Ending off the month of February, Gold Crescent Pictures’ new Sci-Fi/Action film ByteRealm brought its box office prospects out of the virtual reality and into real life, scoring a solid $39 million opening. The Dacre Montgomery/Hailee Steinfeld led vehicle scored an A- with audiences and should manage to hold up next weekend given the lack of any competition, at least until ‘The Last Six’ opens on March 12th. ‘Medusa’ and ‘Perfect Match’ also continue to prove themselves strong each posting a sub -40% drop. Meanwhile, the New Journey Pictures Classics’ drama The Mona Lisa started off its platform release with a $165k opening from 4 theaters.
