What are the films that should/could have had a new record OW but didn't because they were released on a Wednesday  ?

Phantom Menace and Revenge of the Sith come to mind.

Any other ?

Matrix Reloaded broke the OD record on a Thursday.

When you look at the Batman numbers, it's weird WB never did anything with their other superhero properties. They could have beaten Marvel at the game years ago.

Before the digital age everything was difficult/impossible to do so that  s why they couldn't take advantage of their characters that much.

Batman was the easiest to pull off in a grounded universe.

Superman had become a joke in the 80's partially because of that, you couldn't 't make great SUperman moments/action set pieces with 80's technology.

Compare OG Superman in 1978 and Man of Steel in 2013 to see the giant leap in VFX.

The History of the MCU is linked with the history of the VFX industry and its technological advances.

Perhaps Twilight: Eclipse? It brought in almost $70m on Wednesday and had made nearly $158m by the weekend.

Just got home, holy hell what a crazy ass OW WW. Literally in every single territory, it not only out opened IW but it destroyed it, hell Europe and even Japan came to the party.

Lol as usual Disney's severely underestimating Sunday. More likely it hits 90-94M. Just need 7M, to push the total to 357M like the predecessors.

Actually Star Wars is still #1 if we're talking all time power at the box office. Their adjusted domestic grosses have been discussed a lot already, but what about opening weekends?

3 opening weekend records, I believe: Star Wars, Return of the Jedi, Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Here's the other thing to keep in mind though! The prequels were all so close but held back by the fact that they were weekday openers. Revenge of the Sith opened to $108M - just $6M shy of the then opening weekend record of $114M - after a still-record $50M opening day on Thursday! The Phantom Menace opened to almost $65M after releasing on a Wednesday and would have surely beat the opening weekend record of $72M at the time.

Annnnnd people are already ahead of me in discussing this haha.

I doubt that. If it couldn’t beat TDK over the course of five days, it doesn’t seem like it would’ve been able to beat it over three.

Spider-Man 2 probably had a good shot. Probably Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen could have challenged as well.

Endgame's OS OW will be very nearly as much as Avengers 1's entire OS gross. Absolutely bonkers.

I joined the forum because of Avengers 1's run. Can't say I've learned much since then despite all the knowledge on display here but it's definitely fun to see all the pretty numbers go up and up!

Spider-Man 2, which broke it the following year, possibly too. And if Sith had been released on Friday, it likely would have meant DMC settling for #2.

Independence Day also would have beat Batman Forever.

I mean they were doing stuff it was just that they let Nolan do his thing before jumping to the Marvel style with MoS and that just went a bit sideways.

I was talking about Batman's 80's and 90's run.

Yeah, Phantom Menace and Revenge of the Sith definitely would have broken the weekend records of their times if they had opened on Friday. Shrek 2 and Spider-Man 2 probably also would have nudged past Spider-Man's weekend record in 2004. The Matrix Reloaded would have landed close to Spider-Man had it opened on Friday - it would have been within a couple million in either direction, methinks. Ditto for Revenge of the Fallen with respect to The Dark Knight's record in 2009.

Twilight: Eclipse would not have gotten anywhere near the weekend record of its time, though. It performed about on par with New Moon, and that one landed a ways back of The Dark Knight's record despite the record-breaking opening day.

Return of the King, given that it made 34m on a Wednesday, could have been the first 100m December opener with a Friday release. Pre-Shrek 2 the OW top 3 could have been Matrix Reloaded, SM1, ROTK. And The Passion of the Christ would've presumably beat Potter's 90m as well.
