I remember Kermode talking in a podcast with Jack Howard about how incels complaining about Captain Marvel should be locked in a basement and handed a steelbook copy of Under the Silver Lake. Not really sure what the general consensus about the film is outside of that.

Hahahah yes.

Given that it has a 5.7 average rating and 59 on Metacritic I don't think there is a firm general consensus. Most reviewers seem cool on it, a bunch of them I'm sure having tripped over the usual depiction = endorsement mistake. But I've also seen a small but growing number of very strong raves. I found it a lot of fun and I think it's 100% destined to be a cult movie.

I'd like to take a quick moment to thank this community for making this type of box office discussion possible.  Minimal vitreol, delight in the yin/yang of predictibility/surprise, and enjoyment at the wonder of it all.

I stumbled onto this group in 2008 at BOM, the same year a certain audacious franchise got underway.  Blockbusters give us the joy of shared experience and this community gives us another tangential shared experience.

Perfectly balanced, as all things should be.

This really is such a great forum. I feel like almost everybody here is so nice and chill and have a sense of humor, particularly in contrast to reddit (where I have more followed box office discussion) where everybody is constantly unnecessary rude, mean and stubborn and.. reddit-y. And users here can show when they are enthusiastic or emotional about something when in reddit they are trying to act like they are supposedly some super neutral and objective professionals when they are in fact still fanboys lol.

Important bit is that it'll look like $207/257/357m in any summary. Precision math can look the other way on this one....

Yeah, very slightly annoying, but I’d rather keep the 7 tradition alive than get EXACTLY $100 million over IW (especially because it looks so good written out).  To do that, it would need to make like 357.9, very narrow window.  Crazy that other than Age of Ultron, these movies all make multiples of 50 that end in 7 in their opening weekends.

"Maoyan presales for Endgame suggest a huge comeback, even bigger than expected, Wednesday presales could go as high as Friday presales and Tuesday presales are up by more than 100% from Monday, should end over Sunday presales with ease. $600M seem very likely to me the giving presales."

I've been saying this for days. This guy is quoting me.:ca:

So basically in the 1990s the OW record was always held by a Batman or Jurassic Park movie. How very 1990s.

I always hear/from what I've gathered, the summer of 1989 was like the blueprint for modern day crazy openers / blockbuster tentpoles due to Indy 3, Ghostbusters 2, Batman, Lethal Weapon 2, etc.

I was too young, but I hear the hype for Batman89 was absolutely insane according to what I've read/followed.

First post, long-time lurker.

What an astonishing weekend to witness.
I noticed Endgame pushed Inception's 293m to #51 dom of the 2010s.
Here is the current list of original live action films in the top-50 of the decade:
