Leonardo DiCaprio is in talks to star in Nightmare Alley, the Gullermo del Toro-directed thriller for Fox Searchlight. Del Toro wrote the script with Kim Morgan and he’s producing with J. Miles Dale.

The film is being  financed by Guillermo Del Toro and J. Miles Dale with TSG Entertainment, with Fox Searchlight acquiring worldwide distribution rights to the film that is based on the 1947 film about a corrupt con-man who teams up with a female psychiatrist to trick people into giving them money. It’s based on the novel by William Lindsay Gresham.

Big fan of the 1947 Original which is one of the great Film Noirs. Incredible performance by Tyrone Power.

Interested in what Del Toro can do with this. It will be the first film he had done in a while in which there will be no actual supernatural or Sci Fi element. All the Psychic/Superenatural elements are phony.. It's all a fraud,a con, a scam; that basic to the plot.

Wonder who Del Toro will get for the female lead.

I also wonder if he will do it in period. SOme elements would probably work better in a 1940's setting then modern times.

And more timely then ever, since fake mediums are raking in big bucks..

I hope he keeps the great final line, and wonder if he will keep in the geek angle. A lot of people will be surprised that that term was originally applied to a rather gross Carnival Sideshow act.....

Brilliant film and performance by Power - too bad the studio screwed him over.

Leo's a bit too old though for the role at least as portrayed in the earlier film, especially in the early scenes where he's a young man.

This is literally a dream pairing come true. Leo is officially back!

And it's one hell of a meaty role. "Wolf of Wall Street" showd Leo can do fast talking con men well..and the lead in
Nightmare Alley is one of the classic con man roles.

Glad to see in another story on this that Del Toro paid tribute to the original film. He knows he has one hell of an act to follow, and this will bring out, hopefully, his best efforts.

Wonder who will get the female lead. It is one of the great Film Noir Female Trapdoor Spider/Femme Fatale roles.

What this definitely means is that this is one del Toro project that won't be bogged down in development hell (The Shape of Water being such a hit probably helped get it fast-tracked). I'm guessing there'll be a late-2020 release at the earliest.

He's also supposed to do Pinocchio for Netflix, but given the nature of stop-motion, he can always shoot both simultaneously (he also has a co-director which will ease the pressure), and I think Pinocchio's set for 2021 anyway.
