If you adjusted Titanic with everything, inflation, 3D, I max and emerging markets, it would be today close to a 4B WW grosser.

Thats how much of a freak of nature it was, it is the Godwin point of box office discussion.

There is Titanic and

the rest.

Titanic wouldn't even have grossed 500 million in 2019.

The end.

Youre funny. Cameron-Stans are going to use the whole inflation argument to ‘defend’ Endgame annihilating it at the box office. Endgame is going to hit the top 10-15 all time adjusted for inflation, in an era where there is a lot more piracy, a lot more competition, and in an era of movies coming quicker to streaming services.

Different times HAS to be taken into consideration. Not just inflation. Growing up in the 90’s, movie industry was so much more different than now!

What competition are we talking about?  It's had two consecutive weeks unopposed. I'm far from a "Cameron-stan".   If I had to watch End Game right now or Titanic right now I'd choose End Game,  I find it to be more enjoyable.  I think Titanic is a better made film but not one that holds the same replay value for me.  Trying to paint  everyone as a "stan" is concerning.  That is only going to further crater the discourse.

All those directors did prove their critical and commerical success after and before their breakthrough movies though. And none of those directors made a film that was part of an already popular IP except for maybe Nolan and the Batman movies but it can be debated that he made Batman popular again (as shown by the growth from Batman Begins to TDK). James Cameron was still able to make huge commercial and critical successes with new IP after Aliens (his breakthrough movie and a movie from an already popular IP) and The Coen Brothers still were able to get nominated for 21 Academy Awards outside of their nominations for Fargo.

But they didn't have their first succcess belittled and only validated once they had other successes didn't they ?

All their breakthrough successes have been validated and recognized as such from the get go, without being conditionned by their career pre or post it successful or not.

For those keeping record,

Endgame will have 36 records with today updates. Might as well be 37 if Disney go ballsy with 2nd weekend record.

https://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/?page=byrecord&p=.htm

I'm still curious if Disney will indeed let the second weekend record go for Endgame in favor of TFA. I mean, only $45m Sunday estimate seems a bit too low. Can't wait to see both your updates, Rth's and the actuals tomorrow.

The end.

And EG wouldn't have made a billion in 1995. And SW wouldn't have made what it did now. And Jaws would be a flop next year. Gone With The Wind would be a Netflix movie.

And on and on and on.

It's arguments like this that make me hate comparisons beyond the exact hard numbers. Yes, we all know there are numerous factors that change with time, so the comparisons will ALWAYS be skewed. That's why I would rather just look at reported figures and be done with it, otherwise the discussion goes down a rabbit hole and we all go insane.

Romantic movies were still massive in the 90s. They peaked back then. Don't make me list them - cause I will. Titanic would have never taken off in 2019. End Game had more competition and the fact that it's grossing these number in Spring/Summer is insane.

That speculation could be true and maybe End Game would have made less if it released in 2045, is that have any relevance too ? That said lot of people  said that Titanic would have not taken off in 1997, if a romantic movie like Beauty and the Beast can be bigger in 2017 than 1992, who knows for Titanic.

Has for competition, Titanic released the same weekend than a James Bond movie followed by an rom-com targeting the same audience that made 150m the weekend after, what was End Game competition ? Everyone stayed away.

Where in the rules does it state that End Game cannot be compared to movies that came before it?   Titanic is a "fan war" movie now?  It's not even a franchise..   it's one movie that came out in the 90s.   This is what I mean about the discourse.  People are uncomfortable with comparisons.  It's moved past a Marvel, DC or Star Wars etc.  thing..   Now we can't compare this to Titanic lol.

I will as soon as you stop undercutting End Games achievements, defending your favourite Hallmark movie.

This reminds of the sports' arguments of "best player of all time" - throw in your "best player" choice from 2 decades apart, and you find out you can't possibly compare them b/c the sport was just different in each era...so Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, and Lebron James can all be the right answer for someone...and never the right answer for everyone, b/c it truly is impossible to compare basketball in the 1950's to basketball in the 1980's to basketball in the 2010's...

It's equally impossible to compare box office across decades...the industry is totally different once you start crossing decades...it's a struggle to just compare 10 years apart, let alone 20+...it's not the same industry or the same circumstances...better to say they are all awesome and leave it at that:).
