Yup. As insane as that OW was for TFA, I am now convinced 300 would have been obliterated had it opened in summer. It had a gigantic PTA but it couldn't reach the same number of theaters as EG, due to the busy holiday season and, of course, the gross was spread out across that period (leading to that huge second weekend as well).

I agree with you 100% but isn't it funny how much the narrative has changed now? at first we thought that there's no way that TFA what do massive opening weekend business because it was the Christmas season. Then it'll be later rated everything and now we are coming to realize that it probably could have done even more if it wasn't so spread out over the holidays. This of course takes nothing away from endgame obviously.

The MCU hasn't made more money on a per-film basis. The MCU average (DOM) is $360m, the Star Wars average is $420m DOM.

And, that's not adjusting for inflation, which would work greatly to the advantage of Star Wars. E.g., The Empire Strikes Back is listed at $209m, but adjusted for inflation that becomes $884m indicating its huge popularity at the time. Even more recent films, like 1999's Phantom Menace, which sits at $431m, adjusts to a whopping $813m.

Overall, adjusted for inflation, the SW franchise has the #2, #11, #13, #16, and #18 films of all time. The MCU doesn't check in on this list until #29 (Avengers), though within a week or so Endgame will surpass that.

So looked at that way, it's not surprising that SW has more year-end #1 DOM winners than the MCU.

The MCU also has 22 movies in 10 years and started as an independent studio. Disney attempted to pull off something way more conservative with Star Wars and failed spectacularly.

Benefit of hindsight.

But, that is one of the most fun things about the box office - realizing what COULD have been. :)

Titanic rules obviously. The biggest movie success of all time worldwide. Star Wars (original), Endgame, GWTW, Avatar are no match at all.

This basically spell the doom to anyone that try to downplay Titanic's miracle.

Only movie that really failed was Solo. Wouldn’t say Disney “failed spectacularly”. It just happened one movie grossed 900m and every other SW movie will now be judged against it.

Why did they do that movie ? From the moment it was announced everyone was asking that question
Also why didn't they make more movies like Rogue One ? IMO it was the best SW movie, why not make more of that instead ? It's not like it didn't make money

A second weekend of 146 or so is VERY impressive but not when you open a 110 million more than the current second wknd record holder and fail to surpass it's second weekend

In absolute $$, sure, but again, you have to look at when said record holder opened.

Revisionism at its best.

Good.

What are you on about? Who's saying that? There was one comment that talked about missing the 2nd weekend record is a slight disappointment, but we're still a good 2-3 weeks away from entering the what went wrong phase.

Well duh The Lightsabers and the Avatars will deliver other stats to rate it as a disappointment like: Force Awakens had the biggest third weekend counting people with green eyes and bla bla bla.

As in movies about characters we didn't meet before in the Skywalker saga ?

The characters were the least interesting aspect of that movie and its connection to the Death Star, Vader and immediate release after TFA is what sold it, not "the unique characters".

Don't get me wrong, I think they SHOULD move away from the same ol' same ol', but Rogue One was not it.

For me I think TFA does 300+ (325 maybe) but at least 40 million less than it's December gross with the same date End Game had. Do we think Aquaman even sniffs 1.14b in April? Coming from someone who loved Aquaman.
