When my American History teacher was absent one day he had us watch The Patriot with the instruction to critique it. He was so mad about how many howlers most of the class missed. (Not me!)

Part of the problem was definitely that a lot of people thought it was just busy work to fill time when he was absent.

Anybody who has actually fired a black powder musket laughed when GIbson picked up two, fired them at the same time and hit both is targets. The damn things kick like a mule.

looking at his disaster back catalogue, i think as a general rule, the campier / dafter the film, the more enjoyable it is.

so:

Godzilla - bad

Independence Day - good

The Day After Tomorrow - bad

White House Down - good

2012 - bad

Moonfall - good

Tbh, I still like the Day After Tomorrow. It's fun! Jake Gyllenhaal is cute! What's not to like!

It's pretentious attempts to claim to be a "serious" film about Global Warming. That sort of ruined it for me.

2012 is the greatest disaster movie of all time whereas White House down was a shitter Olympus has Fallen

I lasted 55 minutes. This shit is terrible. An Asylum movie with a bigger budget and all the same flaws. Just miserable.

EDIT

I finished it. Second half is way better than the first but it still doesn't help much. The destruction sequences are just not that impressive, especially in 2022. The brief scene of the destruction of NY looks great but I'm pretty sure a PS5 can produce something similar.

Normally the human characters are what make or break these things. In Moonfall the humans are just not compelling, or interesting, or fun, or memorable. They just slowly move around from point A to point B. These destruction films can have characters that can be irritating or flat out offensive but here it feels like everyones been neutered to the point where they're not engaging.

The film also doesn't blend the human characters reaction to the destruction well. 2012 and Transformers did that very well but with Moonfall it's obvious I'm watching actors on a set screaming about the CG debris in the previous shot.

It's BULLSHIT. Please avoid.

That's the problem for me. The fun I get from the destruction is outweighted by the pain of the bad writing in recent Emmerich films.

I will just wait until I can view it at home and fast forward through the crap.

I think Emmerich took the disaster genre as far as it could go in "2012". Once you destroy the entire world, even destroying it again is anticlamatic.
