PARADISE ISLAND

Best Picture

Best Director (Debra Granik)

Best Ensemble

Best Actress (Tessa Thompson)

Best Supporting Actor (Chadwick Boseman)

Best Original Screenplay

Best Original Score (Mica Levi) (Given that this is her first collaboration with Granik, imagine something softer and more acoustic and lightly orchestral than technical. There's a simple magic to the melodies, guided by the movement of strings like waves along the short of a coast. As we meet the characters, their motifs are largely defined by the piano and cello. Imagine something like Nicholas Britell's work in capturing the quiet serenity of universal experiences within humanity, but with a sobering undercurrent on how things are about to be pulled under the rug for these characters. As the film gets closer and closer to the island's ultimate fate, lightly synthetic elements take ove, slightly distorting the music from what we had heard before. It is also used to highlight the gap between the island and the rest of the world. Eventually, we are left with new themes that combine the natural and technical, still ethereal and hopeful, but removed from what it had previously been.)

The Most Wanted Man in Great Britain

Best Picture

Best Director - Thomas Vinterberg

Best Ensemble

Best Actor- Tom Holland

Best Supporting Actress- Florence Pugh

Best Supporting Actor- Dan Stevens

Best Supporting Actor- Sam Heughan

Best Original Screenplay

Best Original Score- Craig Armstrong (The core of the music for most of the film is meant to evoke a pastoral adventure of sorts, with soft strings, minimal horn accompaniment, and plenty of gentle woodwinds such as clarinets and oboes. It is meant to give a sense of sweeping, almost dreamlike movement across the hills, fields, and moors of England as the characters scramble from one escape attempt to the next. Backing up this core is a moving, emotional romantic theme for Charles and Jane, which doubles down on the instrumental choice (minus horns) to convey a mix of passion and wistfulness. A variant of the romantic theme, which is piano-centric and minimal accompaniment by other instruments, plays in a few places, most notably at the end of the film, with the end of the piano variant featuring a rushing crescendo of strings. The action sequences, most notably the battle at the film's start, is heavy on booming percussion baseline with a rat-a-tat percussion secondary to that, with horns and strings contributing, the strings taking more precedence in instances of quieter, slowly mounting tension before either a burst of violence or the tension defused. For examples of musical inspirations for how to envision the score, use THIS and THIS )

Hired Guns

Best Picture

Best Director - David Michod

Best Ensemble

Best Actor- Adam Driver

Best Supporting Actor- Josh Brolin

Best Supporting Actor - Pedro Pascal

Best Original Screenplay

Best Original Score - Antony Partos (The foundation of the music for the film is twangy, moody strings permeating the background, setting an ominous undercurrent of tension to mesh with the ability of violence to suddenly erupt at any moment. In more placid moments the strings get slightly more relaxed, with some woodwinds filtering in. In more energetic scenes the strings are accompanied by riffs on an electric guitar. For the action scenes, there predominant instrument is indeed the electric guitar, with jagged, savage notes and cues to go with the bursts of bloody violence. Additionally, each of the Hired Guns has their own musical cue, as well as Jackson, their target.)

Mass Effect: Ascension

Best Ensemble

Best Adapted Screenplay

Best Original Score- John Powell (This film score retains all of the major themes/cues that appeared in the first movie, and adds several new ones. There is a theme for the Ascension Project, that relies heavily on electronic and synth instruments to create an atmosphere of science and discovery. There is a soft and earnest piano theme for Gillian, representing her warm-hearted idealism, which contrasts with a lower and harsher cue for Zero/Jack that is string-based and reflects a harsher edge to her character. There is a theme for the Citadel that is soaring and proud, mixing strings, horns, and synths to reflect a cultural and social center for the galaxy. Lastly there is a theme for Cerberus, which is low and dark with brooding percussion and synths, as well as a deep male vocal chorus that chants various vocal cues using archaic Greek as the language. In general, the music is a bit more thrumming and and racing than the music for the first film) (track list will be linked to separately)

Thanks to my Bajan family, I just came up with a great idea for the opening scene of Heartman.

You’ll learn to fear hearshes and sugar cane fields. I’m truly excited to write this.
