I'm really glad I've committed myself to making a list because, while considering which films to watch, I've come up with a good idea for a paper that I can write for my class. While searching through Kanopy, I found Ida by Pawel Pawlikowski. The paper is about film and the bible (and how they intermix), so as someone who agrees with Auteur Theory, I want to compare Robert Bresson and Pawel Pawlikowski--in other words, I want to compare how both filmmakers implemented their Catholic faith in their respective films--Bresson's A Man Escaped and Pickpocket, and Pawlikowski's Ida (and maybe Cold War too for good measure).

Cold War doesn't really have anything to do with faith or religion at all. From Bresson on this theme the two you mention are good but try to watch Diary of a Country Priest first and foremost, if you can.

Also see some b&w films from this list. Dreyer (The Passion of Joan of Arc, Day of Wrath, Ordet) and Bergman (The Seventh Seal, Winter Light) especially. Andrei Rublev too even if it's ineligible for this thread cause it has some color.

Arsenic and Old Lace?

@Tower  I PMd then (September) grim22 my list, I guess it's not with you?

My problem is, I do not always know the titles, especially not the English titles.

Love e.g. a movie where a widow knew the truth abut her glorified by the youth... as a bad man who misuses them for his goals. She dies too ans a writer, who at first was there for another reason then writes the scandal-story

Anyone an idea what the title is? I want to rewatch that literally since decades, but can't remember the title

These are the twenty one films that will definitely be on my list:

A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night
The Artist
Breathless
The Bicycle Thieves
Citizen Kane
The General
His Girl Friday
Ida
Loves of a Blonde
The Maltese Falcon
A Man Escaped
Man With a Movie Camera
Metropolis
Nebraska
Persona
Pi
Pickpocket
Psycho
Rashomon
Roma
Stagecoach

The films that I'm hoping to watch before the deadline are:

The 400 Blows

Embrace of the Serpent

Good Night, and Good Luck

Seven Samurai

Any of those that I can't watch will be replaced with an old Soviet film because I watched a whole bunch of those for a project but I'm hesitant to support those.

I had seen most of those films prior to making a list, but my goal is to have my list represent black and white films from a broad array of time periods and movements.

Yes. I made a slight error there with the title. Thanks for reminding me.

That was more about:

I am mostly aware about the German titles for older movies (watched them mostly then on TV here in German) I was not sure, like maybe a similar sounding movie might exist that I do not know the English title for.

See e.g. The Mark of Zorro ( 2 black & white versions exist) and The Mask of Zorro (1 colour version)

Hence the question mark :)

If you want to know the English title just search the original in IMDB and it will show you in the page. This is what I do when people submit lists with foreign titles.

I know, thx a lot!

Just in case:

That works not always, especially older titles can have alternative titles that do not show up. VHS, DVD,.... sometimes very confusing, I bought more than a handful of movies twice based on that.

My main problem is, I do often not know any title, beside being able to tell the film step by step. My brain seemingly does not like titles.

Its the same with books:

I know the story, but neither the title nor the author's name. I guess its in part based on my face-blindness, as I can not remember faces anyway (plus I was at 18 schools, didn't help then), I never really trained to 'save' names in my childhood.

Btw I missed the ranked detail in your first post, that could mean no input by me, as I do not have a ranking 'mind' (beside The Night of the Hunter for special reasons) for me its more groups, like ~

love, like, still enjoy/like but, didn't like but, not like at all

All titles on my list are at least still enjoy/like but or better

Not sure, its too long ago, I thought grim then planed to do a simple count how many movies get named how often?

This version sounds like a ton of work for you, kudos!

The lists we do on this forum are always ranked, I don't see much point in an unranked one.

@terrestrial  This site lists movies my decade (and has a few best 100 lists) and if you click the title it gives a summary.  Just clicking through them might help you match some classic films to US titles.

https://www.filmsite.org/200films.html

https://www.filmsite.org/greatlists.html

Thank you a lot!!!!

I'll have to revisit those a lot I guess

Two titles I already found there (but not the one see my earlier description)

Notorious (1946)

Key Largo (1948)

:)

I guess I never did a list here at BOT then before. In the past I wrote some at a site where they simply added up e.g. let's say 10 ppl name 12 Angry Men, than it gets 10 points, 8 ppl list e.g. Casablanca, so that one gets 8 points... the result being the sum of all titles and counts of them

Maybe simpler, but still making sense in my POV

Not sure if I find time, maybe at the weekend I'll be able to sit down and try 😉
