So I tried to do Star Wars, unlike other films tracking it won't be close to perfect but it is what it is.

When I started, I only had Europe's big 4 admissions for original release and UK (gross only), Japan & Australia numbers, which though majority of the box office of the film but wasn't all. Also with no absolute clarity of what gross will be in European countries, it wasn't really helpful.

Thankfully I found E.T. country wise numbers and had admissions numbers for Europe with me already, so that helped putting gross numbers for European markets. Also based on how other European countries did for E.T. relatively to Germany, France, Italy and Spain, was able to put gross estimates for rest of Europe. Similarily, got Brazil admissions numbers and estimated its gross taking E.T. reference. Accorded some gross to Latin America and basically left the residue as rest.

For Domestic, I got the year wise gross and took NATO average ticket price + 10% as is the case with bigger films having higher ticket price than the average. That gave 124.3mn admissions for 5 years of releases.

Quote

  Gross Admits ATP
1977 $201,000,000 80,400,000 $2.50
1978 $64,000,000 24,600,000 $2.60
1979 $22,450,000 8,000,000 $2.81
1981 $17,250,000 5,800,000 $2.97
1982 $18,000,000 5,500,000 $3.27
Total $322,700,000 124,300,000 $2.60

For Special Edition it was business as usual, as numbers are available for almost all countries, except a minor problem.

Spoiler

The Mojo has $26mn for UK but UK gross was £21mn which will be $34mn Approx. I took the higher number but problem with that is the overall International gross should be $127mn Approx.

There is slight possibility that the total gross internationally is $313mn and first run was just $186mn, but I have ignored that for now.

After considering all, I have following results. Star Wars had 258mn admits worldwide of which 151mn are from USA/Canada.

If you have any inputs to give, please do.

After compiling Star Wars, I think its safe to assume that Titanic, Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War are biggest Hollywood films since 1975 at least.

Star Wars in its initial run had 209mn admits for $518mn gross, E.T. with $723mn should be around 225-250mn at max. Similarily Jaws should be 210-230mn. None of the Star Wars trilogy film even crossed 200mn most probably.

Other than these, I don't think there's any other film even coming close to 200mn admits till 1993 Jurassic Park, with The Lion King (1994) coming very close at 193mn. I thought perhaps Independence Day has a chance, but in the end it fell short by some millions.

Must be quite the task counting GWTW all time admissions

So we have France at 16mn and Germany at 13mn. UK 35mn is by BFI which are basically useless. Might be around 20mn. Australia numbers are too big to be true. 38mn.

What am not able to understand is the fact where did it gross $200mn overseas when even after 25 years later Star Wars grossed $195mn and it do have really good Europe numbers, even Japan and Australia.

Again, great thread. Thank you very much @charlie Jatinder

Just a petition: could you post the list of most attended films excluding China? or even excluding both DOM and China? I know that in last few years, there are more expanding markets beyond China, but it is obvious that China, as the 2nd biggest market in the world, has changed everything for WW grosses and attendance. There are old films which were not even released there (today it still happens but it is not very usual for big blockbusters). Thank you in advance :)

Yeah that's nice filter @peludo and should see the Europe heavy films to be in top, Potter, LoTR, Avengers (strong Asia, Latin America & good Europe). Joker will be there too.

The top 4 will mostly be same but a slight change in order

  1. Titanic: 238mn (First run 226mn)
  2. Avengers: Endgame: 223mn
  3. Avatar: 189mn
  4. Avengers: Infinity War: 170mn
  5. The Lion King (2019): 166mn
  6. Frozen 2: 134mn

Furious 7 will be there, surprisingly at 125mn. The Avengers will be around 116mn. LoTR 3 will be 110mn and most likely Fellowship would be around that. Potter 1 may be close to that number as well. ET should be around 120mn.

Charlie you are a real expert and I have a big request: the highest grossing films in Europe (including also Russia/Usrr?).

We can already imagine a top 5 like this:

- Avatar

- Titanic

- The Force Awakens

- The Lion King (2019)

- Avengers Endgame (probably)

But how a top 10 would look like? What about Harry Potter 8, Skyfall, Spectre, Lord of the Rings, Infinity War...

Since it is an admissions thread, I will go with just admissions. Gross wise 2000s and early 2010s films will have edge due to Exchange rates and inflation is very low. e.g.

The top most watched films in Europe since 1997. Before that numbers could be bigger, original Star Wars perhaps reaching 55-60mn. E.T. could be 70mn plus. There were Indian films doing 50mn plus admissions in USSR so there's really no point going there.

  1. Titanic: 115mn
  2. Avatar: 93mn

Gone with the wind should at least 370m WW

NA:220m

EU:Near 100m

Australia:40m

so we can count 360m

The performance of GWTW in Asia is also impressive. I recently conducted a detailed study on the box office markets of various countries around the world in the 1950s and 1960s.

GWTW broke the box office record of imported movies in China. The box office is close to 40 million fiat ,and 200,000 admissions

In Japan, GWTW’s box office revenue was close to 190 million yen, which was the second-largest box office in Japan that year, and the first in imports. There were also millions of viewers.

In Hong Kong, GWTW broke the record with a box office of 1 million Hong Kong dollars. After re_release, Taipei’s box office reached T80 million. Hong Kong and Taiwan also have millions of tickets. In Seoul, South Korea, there are more than 560,000 tickets

The entire Asia may be close to 10 million, but I don’t have a data of GWTW performence in Latin American market

Concerning GWTW and Spain, I only have data from Ministry of Culture, but talking about 70 years ago (the film was released here in 1950 because of censorship) data are always very doubtful.

Anyway, I read some time ago that GWTW had been released in just 2 theaters in the whole country (Madrid and Barcelona), and it sold 1 million admissions during about 250 days it was at those 2 theaters. In fact, Ministry of Culture says 1,059,855 admissions for GWTW.

FOTR over HP1, and so close to both TFA and TLK? WOW.... I thought that even although HP1 had a huge advantage from Japan, it had been bigger in Europe too. It won the battle in the 2 biggest European markets: UK and France. Glad to see this result, since although I like HP1 a lot, FOTR is my favorite blockbuster ever. And of course, glad to see the whole LOTR trilogy in top 10.

I honestly don't believe Australia 39mn figure. That's some BS.

Also GWTW North America numbers are close to 160mn.

Europe seems about right. France with 40mn population had 15mn viewers. Germany with 68mn population has 13mn viewers while UK with 50mn population is said to be 35mn but as is case with all BFI numbers, that number is some BS, may be reality was close to 20mn. So in 158mn population countries it had 48mn Approx viewership.

Not counting USSR, Europe had 300mn population in 1950s, which shall have the film around 90mn perhaps.

Now USSR donno how big it was or whether the film even released there.

The problem I am not able to understand is that where did GWTW grossed $200mn internationally. The ATP in Germany was equivalent to 0.45 euro in 1950, which roughly give $7mn Approx gross. Similarily UK I can go at max $12mn using 20mn admissions.

An Indian film released during same period in USSR and China, Awaara is said to have 100mn viewership in USSR grossing $17mn while in China $9mn with 100mn viewership.
