Breaking In

May 16, 10:45 AM, 20% full in a 78 seat auditorium
AMC Lake Square 12

Trailers

Hotel Artemis: Murmurs (there were two teens behind me that were talking very loudly as well)

Adrift: No reactions

Mission: Impossible - Fallout: No reactions (those girls were shushed by someone and they kept it down)

Superfly: No reactions (after this trailer, an old woman kept shouting "ANOTHER ONE?!?!?!" at the start of every trailer)

The Darkest Minds: No reactions

Ocean's 8: No reactions

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again: No reactions

Night School: Laughs

After the madness during the trailers, I was shocked to see the audience quiet for most of the movie. There were a couple of gasps and a few whispers, but otherwise it was quiet! However, halfway through the movie, some guy started snoring somewhat loudly. That stopped in the film's climax, but the snoring was traded for some VERY LOUD commentary from a lot of the audience. An old black guy in my row was the source of most commentary, and it. Was. Glorious.

SPOILERS AHEAD

Spoiler

The son grabs the gun and holds the main thief at gunpoint: "CAP HIS ASS!" "SHOOT THAT MOTHERFUCKER!" A lot of the audience was getting involved in this scene

The main thief sees Grabielle Union and empties his gun: "Bitch, we know there's one loaded!" *empties the last bullet* "Oh."

The family is reunited: "Man, her husband ain't worth shit!" The entire audience ERUPTED in laughter when he said that :hahaha:

There's plenty more I'm forgetting. Needless to say, it greatly enhanced a repetitive finale.

Trailers:

Mission Impossible: Fallout (it looks so gooood)

Lots of the jokes hit. Pretty consistent laughter throughout. Felt a bit weird being the only one not laughing at some points but oh well.

The Death of Stalin

May 22nd, 7:00 PM, well-attended

Thalian Hall

Trailers

RBG (the art film to be shown next week)

A lot of laughter throughout the film. Upon leaving, a man said to his friend, "That's not a movie I'd ever see again." A group of older women were also standing in a circle, talking about how terrible the Soviet Union was.

Deadpool 2

7:00 5/23

75% full. It was discount day at the theater here so it was pretty crowded for a week night.

Trailers:

Bohemian Rhapsody

The Predator

Johnny English 3

The Happytime Murders (Red-Band) - The theater went nuts during the end of the trailer

Sorry to Bother You (Red-Band)

Replicas

Pretty much the kind of reaction you would expect from this kind of movie. Theater was laughing throughout the entire movie and even a few people applauded at some jokes. The post-credits scene got the biggest laughs of the entire movie.

I enjoyed it, but I thought the first film was much better.

Avengers: Infinity War

7:15PM

12 people.

One of the two 18 to 25-year-old females behind me was literally quoting the movie back to the screen.  Everyone else was pretty silent, aside from the GOTG/Thor meeting which always gets big laughs.

Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again

Will You Ever Forgive Me?

Ocean's 8 - murmurs

Mission: Impossible - Fallout - I heard a "is this the sixth one?"

Trailers

Dog Days

Solo: A Star Wars Story

May 28th, 3:00 PM, 90-95% full

Pointe Theater 14, Wilmington, NC

Many of the audience members were children and teenagers. The theater was so jam-packed that me and my dad had to sit separately.

Trailers

Bohemian Rapsody (some kids started dancing to the Queens music; it was really cute)

Mowgli (murmurs)

Skyscraper (murmurs)

Adrift (significant audience engagement)

Ant-Man and The Wasp (large amounts of laughter)

Laughs at appropriate moments. Gasps at appropriate moments, including the ending's big reveal. Applause at the end, which surprised me. The big takeaway, to me, is that the film's soft debut apparently doesn't mean the general audience is ceasing to like the brand.

Solo: A Star Wars Story

Saturday, May 26, 2:45PM

35% Full

Trailers:

Mission Impossible (No reactions, but I have to say this is one of my favorite trailers of the year.)

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (No reactions, but I have to say this is one of my least favorite trailers of the year.)

Ant-Man & The Wasp (The "It Takes Two" Trailer.  Couldn't hear the reactions over me going: "Mom, Mom, LOOK!")

A quiet crowd.  A few laughs here and there.  But there weren't any big cheers or reactions to some of the more obvious fan service moments.

Avenger: Infinity War

Monday, May 28, 6:30PM

75% Full (Note: I was at the recliner theater, so the auditorium only fit 50)

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (No reactions)

Ant-Man & The Wasp (Original trailer, not as fun)

Kin (no reactions)

Oof.  This was a rough crowd.  A couple brought their young kids and a baby.  The kid was crying and had to be taken out.  The parents kept getting up and walking around.  The man next to me was on his cell phone for the last thirty minutes.

That said, I'm shocked at how consistently this movie plays to casual audiences.  I've seen it nine times, and the reactions are basically like clockwork: Guardians and Tony gets big laughs, Steve's entrance stirs the crowd, and the third act is just a series of gasps and 'Oh My Gods' at the spoiler points I can't talk about. The women next to me (who's partner was on the phone) and the ten-year-old boy on the other side of me where both lost their minds when It Happened.

Came In Late

I actually examined 'Holy Shit' when I rounded the corner and saw a sea of 60+ white women.  I sat way in the back, because that was the only place left.  It made me feel like an interloper or social scientist on an observational field study.  They effing loved it.  They laughed at everything.  All of them were animated and engaged on the way out.  I heard one woman say she wanted to start a book club.  There was one guy there, whose wife had seen it twice.  (The hubby and I shared a moment, cause I shrugged and said: "Hey, I'm the only here under 30" after a women teased him about being the only guy there.)  They were still all talking about it in the parking lot.  It's was fun.
