The Spy Who Dumped Me

July 27, 7PM, 5% full

Trailers

A Simple Favor ("That looks good")

Robin Hood ("That seems like something Dad would love")

Despite the small crowd, there were some decent chuckles, and a few big laughs over stuff Kate McKinnon did. Mom thought it was a bit silly and gory, but she thought Kate McKinnon was funny.

I tried getting the audience to applause when the credits began rolling, but that mission failed.

Christopher Robin

August 6, 4:15 PM, 30% full in a 124 seat auditorium

AMC Lake Square 12

Trailers

Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween

Wonder Park

The House with a Clock in Its Walls: A few chuckles

Smallfoot

Dumbo: Lots of excited chatter

Mary Poppins Returns: Even more excited chatter

This audience lined up with Deadline's stats. Out of the 40 or so people here, a third were young kids that were very bored by the movie; I heard several say "That was slow" to their parents and grandparents at the end of the movie. However, the older audience members (teens/parents) loved it and laughed a lot throughout.

The Meg (2:00PM; Friday, August 10)

75% full in a ~150 seat theater

TRAILERS:

A-X-L

The Predator

Peppermint (I have a bad feeling about this movie)

Overlord

The House with a Clock In its Walls (this one generated a pretty palpable positive reaction; other than that, total silence throughout the previews)

Venom

Shazam!

Aquaman

I wish trailers weren't so tailored to the movie they played before. I wanted a Boy Erased or Beautiful Boy to come barrellng through in the middle of all the fun superhero stuff and just make everyone sad.

MOVIE:

General silence, no real reactions on the way out. I think this movie will probably do better than expected this weekend, but it's not going to be the surprise hit of the summer. Nobody should ever try to make a $170 million B-movie.

Crazy Rich Asians

4:20 (😎) PM

30 % Full. It was one of the smaller auditoriums.

One asshole came in late, made a ruckus, and occasionally took out his phone.

Trailers

A Simple Favor (My first thought was truly "I'm considering this part of the CRA universe," because Henry Golding)

Searching

Night School

What Men Want

Life Itself (Oscar Isaac is a very handsome man, but he is not a college aged man).

The Hate U Give (I hope the white people in the audience - AKA, everybody except me and my mother - were very uncomfortable).

Smallfoot

A Star Is Born

Reactions were mostly laughs, but I'm going to run down things my mother, who hasn't read the book, said about the characters; No spoilers.

Spoiler

"I would say, no, you're about to be pushed down those stairs," Re: Eleanor

"She needs some girlfriends who would take off her earrings and throw down, but I like her dress," Re: Astrid

"Oh my god," Re: Kitty

"She looks like Carrot Top," Re: Peik Lin, though I daresay she was her favorite character.

"He is SO handsome," re: Nick

A good time was had by all.

Crazy Rich Asians (12:45PM; Friday, August 17)

55% full in a 128 seat auditorium

TRAILERS:
A Simple Favor (Henry Golding is an extremely attractive man. Thank you all for coming to my TED Talk.)

Searching

Night School

What Men Want

Boy Erased (Lucas Hedges is my President)

Life Itself

Smallfoot

A Star is Born

MOVIE:

It's fun! A very effective and enthusiastic use of romcom formula, alongside truly extravagant production design. And as an Asian-American, I must say that it's really very nice to see a cast like this in a major studio release. None of this is anything that hasn't been said by other people more eloquently, but I just wanted to register my thoughts as well. Also, Michelle Yeoh is an international treasure, but you knew that already.

Alpha 3D

August 22, 11:25 AM, 10% full in a 78 seat auditorium

AMC Lake Square 12

Trailers

The House with a Clock in Its Walls: Laughs and murmurs

Kin

Bumblebee

Smallfoot

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween

Alita: Battle Angel (3D): "Wow, December is a busy month"

There were a couple of laughs (some at bad moments), and for some reason, about half the audience was grossed out whenever meat or bugs were eaten. It's prehistoric times ffs! Most of the audience really enjoyed it based on their chatter after the movie.

Crazy Rich Asians

August 22, 1:40 PM, 25% full in a 124 seat auditorium

AMC Lake Square 12

Trailers

A Simple Favor: Murmurs

Night School: HUGE laughs

What Men Want: Laughs

On the Basis of Sex: Excited chatter when RBG says her name

Life Itself

Widows

Smallfoot

A Star Is Born: Murmurs

Plenty of laughs throughout with a few gasps. The audience was very engaged
