Thor: Love and Thunder | July 8, 2022 | Directed by Oscar Winner Taika Waititi | Ninth most profitable movie of 2022

Recommended Posts

This is the last major blockbuster of the summer aimed towards families and big box office. All we have left is Nope and Bullet Train. R rated comedy thrillers for adults. It's looking somewhat dim for the rest of July, but I still think this will open huge despite the early mixed reviews.

The bolded is why Marvel can't blame fandom expectations for disappointment. They put X in the trailer suggesting he would have a pivotal role. It turned out to be a cameo where he keeled over like a jobber. After NWH, if you put crossover character(s) in previews, you know very well that audience expects them to be central to the plot. So it was a deliberate bait and switch and fans (casual and die-hard) reacted accordingly (unimpressive legs).

They also attached the teaser to the end of NWH, which gave the impression that it would deal with the ramifications of that movie’s ending. Not the case at all. It likely doesn’t help that the Professor X we see in MoM isn’t even the same one from the X-Men movies.

Marketing for this has just been weird in general. Not only was the trailer mega late but it really didn't lean into being a Guardians team up, didn't lean into any epic threat with Bale's character like they did with Blanchett (even though Bale is a mega star), didn't exploit an apparent angle with Jane that could have moved numbers (no spoilers but you know what I'm talking about). It's pretty much just...."here's another Thor movie!"

Yeah exactly, they completely butchered marketing campaign for this film, looking back at it it's really shocking how (beside being very very late) uninspired and aimless it was, failed to generate any extra hype for the film. Both trailers were very mediocre.

Ragnarok beside being apparently  better film also had amazing marketing campaign with great, memorable trailers.

Ha, forgot about that but yes. They made their own bed. Mind you, MOM did what it was supposed to do - surpassed the first movie's boxoffice, would have made over 1B with China and Russia. But it disappointed people cause it didn't deliver on what it promised in marketing.

Even with the average reviews, i hope it does well at the BO. July is kinda empty and August is a wasteland

Yeah iirc Ragnarok's legs got fucked by Justice League and The Last Jedi, so with less competition L&T can possibly get a better multiplier.

Too much focus for the marketing team. They were marketing Ms Marvel before so Thor’s one was late (Even now they still have to market Ms Marvel cause it’s still running) and not long after Thor, they have to shift/divide the marketing focus to She-Hulk. So yeah, too much work and focus for them so Thor’s one is kinda meh, rush and like ‘at least I already marketed Thor’ kind of advertising. Different from Ragnarok when the focus was just it and they can focus the shit out of it with much time, heart and soul.

that’s why I think 7 movies+series (and even worse, they’re all connected) a year is content overload. Too much focus and rush will hurt the quality, create some diminishing returns/fatigue from audiences, meh VFX and weak marketing like reflected in this one.

I don't understand you people. Should Marvel Movies be an event forever?. Do you think the masses will go to watch this saga like the biggest think in pop culture for another 20 years?.  What can stay at the top of pop culture for more than 10 years?. The Biggest think in music in 1955 was elvis, in 1965  the beatles, in 1975  Elton John, in 1985 Michael Jackson,

Marvel cinematic universe got its peak from 2012 to 2019. That's all.  If they still make 700-750M with every movie is still good. Our queen Elton can still outsold stadiums and that's enough.

Actually......pretty good perspective, not gonna lie.

The difference is, though, is creating a billion dollar franchise to replace it in today's streaming world isn't as simple as finding the next hot musical act.
