Thor: Love and Thunder | July 8, 2022 | Directed by Oscar Winner Taika Waititi | Ninth most profitable movie of 2022

Recommended Posts

There’s like no middle ground here anymore lol. I’ll bold my points to clarify. Thor: Love and Thunder’s likely $750m total is not a flop, around the break even territory and for a fourth film in a franchise it’s solid, BUT it can also be considered disappointing considering Thor’s risen popularity from 2017 to now, as well as it just barely being over the unadjusted total of Rangarok minus China and still under the adjusted total. It’s like The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s box office results and in addition this to be the third out of six Phase 4 to receive mixed receptions for the GAAgain, this doesn’t mean MCU is doomed, this is a horrible result or Thor is a doomed franchise, they’ll likely retool as they always do but it’s an underwhelming one. Under 1B obviously isn’t a flop, but ~750M is mediocre for Thor 4.

There’s such a thing as being two things.

If Eternals is getting a sequel (an actual flop), I think if it was actually important to the future MCU, this would be getting one too but seeing as more of the announcements from comic con feels pretty separate from this, I don’t think a Thor 5 would’ve happened anytime soon anyways.

Like for sure it’s an underperformance but ultimately one that feels not all that impactful to the upcoming slate.

Flip would be under 657M or so. But needed at least 800 to avoid being a disappointment.

Think it would be be totally fine if the budget wasn’t so inconceivably high. Still don’t underhand that decision. Sure Ragnarok was popular but no clue why they gave this an avengers level budget.

Moderation

Yeah we're done with the "Is 700M a hit" discourse. It's clear we won't change each other's minds, so there's no point in continuing. But @SpiderByte we don't need you to insult others and call them delusional. You can argue against others without these kinds of attacks

They budgeted it Avengers level because they wanted to give the film an Avengers level feel but I think Taika Waititi has messed something up. This THR article back in 2020 said Thor 4 will have Avengers level feel.

So weird cause this ended up feeling extremely standalone and less of a team-up than even Ragnarok which at least had Hulk. Maybe the guardians were meant to have larger roles, like a proper Asguardians of the Galaxy movie but that seems so far from what we got in the film where they just left after 5 minutes and were never heard of again.

I don't think $700 mil is actually a flop btw. I was just joking because the guy is just making shit up about people calling it a flop.

It’s cool, you were very obvious. I think most of not everyone who thought the results weren’t good, do not by any means this was a flop. Some people just choose not to read between the lines.

Also apparently Hercules is probably getting his own movie? Feel like Thor would have to show up in it but based on this and his quote about how he was surprised to see the "Thor will be back" tagline, it does seem like Waititi's done with the franchise.

Hercules: the Rise of the Gods is one of several leaked upcoming MCU projects
