Well, to quote Rafiki, it is time. The film we’re all either greatly anticipating, greatly dreading, or greatly indifferent towards has finally arrived. Disney has been an absolute monster this year, towering over all the other studios with a commanding (albeit terrifying) box office market share, and a long hot streak of megahits from Marvel, Pixar, and their live-action department (pretend Dumbo doesn’t exist). And they look to continue said streak with The Lion King, their latest remake in a long line of remakes.

In 1994, Disney’s animated feature The Lion King was a true phenomenon in every sense of the word. Acclaimed as the best work, arguably the magnum opus, of Disney Animation, the original 1994 film garnered $763.4 million in its initial run, becoming the second highest-grossing film of all time, only behind Jurassic Park, and the highest-grossing animated film of all time, holding the record for nine years, until Pixar’s Finding Nemo came along. And including re-releases, the film is currently at $968.5M worldwide, which means it is still in the top 50 highest grossing films ever made 25 years later. And of course this led to several television shows, an acclaimed Broadway show that is still selling out auditoriums two decades later, two not as acclaimed straight-to-video follow-ups, and an endless supply of merchandise.

With such an evergreen property that still generates millions every year, it was only a matter of time, in an era where Disney is repackaging every classic film of theirs for the new generation, that a live-action (but not really) remake of The Lion King would be in the works. And after Jon Favreau wowed audiences with The Jungle Book in 2016 and Beauty and the Beast broke box office records in 2017, the world is eager to see what the combined powers of Favreau wizardry and 90s nostalgia will deliver in 2019.

And despite mixed reviews, it’s pretty much a given that Disney has another hit movie on their hands. It already opened to $54.7M in China, which is a high for a Disney remake, and the rest of the world has had strong opening days thus far, resulting in a current haul of about 94.5M through Wednesday. But the real question is how high can it go? It is crazy to think that under Beauty and the Beast's $1.26B haul would be considered a disappointment to some people. But hey, this is Disney’s world now, and we’re all living in it.

But before we start the party, there are a few rules you need to read and follow.

1. ABSOLUTELY NO SPOILERS. NOT EVEN SPOILERS POSTED UNDER SPOILER TAGS. This rule is applied to all weekend threads, but it's especially true for this weekend. And no, you snarky little know-it-all who’s gonna post “but we all know what happens lol”, when we say no spoilers, we mean no spoilers. The Lion King is a highly-anticipated release, and it’s confirmed that there are new elements and story details included in this new retelling that people here probably don’t want spoiled. You are free to give general opinions, but try to avoid going into any further detail. This applies to every other movie in theaters. So no Stuber spoilers, no Crawl spoilers, no Far From Home spoilers, etc. If you do spoil something here, you will be banned. No exceptions. Don't be a dick. If you do want to talk about the movie in greater detail, visit the Review That Movie thread right here.

2. KEEP YOUR AGENDA OUT OF HERE. We get it. Disney is the greatest thing ever, and people hating on this movie are jealous and hateful. Disney remakes are the epitome of laziness, are destroying cinema, and Bob Iger/Jon Favreau/Kathleen Kennedy is the spawn of Satan. The Rise of Skywalker is gonna bomb because Ruin Johnson destroyed the franchise. James Cameron is the true box office king. Yadda yadda yadda.

There's a time and place for these kinds of statements...actually, there isn't. But at the very least, it doesn't belong here. If you want to start these beefs related to all of these dumb children's movies, take it to the Fanboy Wars thread right here. If you do this kind of stuff here, you will be banned. No exceptions. So to all the people who want to go on about how “DISNEY IS EVIL. STAR WARS IS DEAD.”, don’t even fucking try. Not gonna name names, but you know who you are. Don't be a dick.

3. NO CRITIC CONSPIRACY THEORIES. Over the past week, we’ve been bombarded with conspiracies from posters here that the evil, moustache-twirling critics are deliberately trying to take down the poor, innocent megacorp Disney by giving The Lion King mixed reviews.

Yeah, no. We're not gonna have this stuff here. I don't care what evidence you have. These types of posts are going to derail the thread and are basically trolling. We'll allow maybe one or two posts about a potential discrepancy between audiences or critics. But if you start repeating yourself, or said posts are inflammatory, or you start promoting the idea that there's some sort of evil conspiracy going around...you will be banned. No exceptions. Again, not naming names, but you know who you are. Don't be a dick.

4. NO POLITICS. In threads like these, politics often spring up for literally no reason. And straight up, politics just aren’t fun to talk about. So if you’re gonna say something about how Lion King is the reason Trump won, or some bullshit...no. Don't be a dick.

5. THE REPORT AND IGNORE BUTTONS ARE YOUR FRIENDS. See a post that might be breaking the rules? DO NOT RESPOND TO IT. Just hit the Report button, give an explanation to the problem, including the context, then hit "Submit". The mods will determine the post and see if it's breaking the rules, and give out repercussions. See a poster that's consistently being annoying? Then just highlight their name, then click "Ignore User" on the pop-up. Also check the “Quotes” box just in case. It'll save lives and hopefully cause less of an uproar or infighting. While trolls are already bad, responding to them only makes it worse. So again...Don't be a dick.

6. IS OFF-TOPIC DISCUSSION OKAY? Well...yes and no. We want people to stick to box office numbers as best as they can. However, there are plenty of dead periods of time with no new numbers, and other discussions will surge. This is especially true in the early days of this thread, where there aren’t any numbers to talk about. And those discussions are okay to have, so long as the off topic discussions don't go overboard. So if there's no action, and you want to talk about the best kind of ice cream, or rank every Jimmy Neutron episode, or argue which Overboard is better, that's totally fine. I also strongly encourage @iHeartJames to say whatever she wants with no filter whatsoever (I know you’re into some furry shit girl). The mods might say otherwise, but I'm allowing it. Just remember to not talk about anything controversial and remember that when the numbers come to keep those discussions down to a minimum. Keep on doing that, and it becomes a chore for many who just want to know the numbers. We will have a post immediately after this one that will focus on just the numbers updated to the most recent estimates, but the phrase still applies. Don't. Be. A. Dick.

And lastly...

7. DON'T BE A DICK. Threads lately have started to become a little too toxic. This is especially true the last couple of weeks, where this film’s discourse has become so strong that even this remake’s very existence has people debating  the merits and ethics of the film industry and its future.

But whatever the reason may be, if you're not following any of these rules or are straight up not being nice, you're going to get the banhammer smashed onto you. Doing some concern trolling to a movie? Banned. Revealing that Scar kills Dumbledore? Banned. Trying to start arguments on controversial topics? Banned. Just posting something unpleasant or mean? Banned. If you're not sure if your post is nice, think to yourself this: "If I post this, will people get mad?" If so, then don't post it. And if you're unsure if you can handle being nice for one weekend, then, simply put, get out of here. You probably know what I'm gonna say next.

TL;DR. No spoilers, no fanboy wars. Keep it nice, keep it neutral, don't attack others, and you'll be fine. If you don't do this stuff, you'll risk a threadban, a suspension, or even a permanent ban, so tread lightly. Outside of that, just have fun!

And two last things...

First of all, this thread will likely lean into being more domestic-focused. If you want to know about how The Lion King is doing in other countries, look at the International section of the forums right here. If you’re especially interested in China, please click right here. The international thread solely dedicated to The Lion King is also available right here.

And second....

WE’RE HAVING A SALE. The homie @Water Bottle has Gold Accounts up for sale, seeing as how this is a big weekend and all. If you’re able to, just donating a little bit of money for a Gold Account not only gives you plenty of great perks, but also helps keep these forums and its servers afloat for another year. We have a lot of exciting weekends coming up in the future, and it would be great for those who can to help out this place.

With that all out of the way, finally, the Countdown has begun. Audiences are getting in Formation to see this, and we’ll see if they will go Crazy in Love for this, or if they think the original 1994 classic is Irreplaceable. Either way, this film is going to Run the World this weekend, and hopefully this thread will be Flawless. (I did this for you @Giesi)

And now...

WITHOUT FURTHER ADO
