Man I dunno if Disney deliberately drew inspiration or took specific imagery from Tezuka's Kimba. I mean, Kimba's story sometimes involves humans (from what I understand), and The Lion King doesn't.

Art takes inspiration from past art all the time. I don’t think they maliciously set out to plagiarize Kimba any more than James Cameron maliciously set out to plagiarize Harlan Ellison. If they had just admitted whether it was an inspiration during development, instead of feigning ignorance, there would be no controversy (other than over the claim that it was “original” - though honestly, if a genre pastiche like Star Wars or Indiana Jones could be considered “original” then so can this. George Lucas literally did plagiarize a synopsis of The Hidden Fortress from a film book for an early story treatment of Star Wars, just replacing names and places and things like that, but the final film is not 1:1 and he admitted his inspiration so nobody cares.)

Yeah the two directors were probably lying. Osamu Tezuka is a legend in manga and animation.

Two story artists, Tom Sito and Mark Kausler (who were both a bit older than the two directors) said they knew about Tezuka's Kimba and said they assumed everyone else did too. But the most common stated influence in the studio was Bambi, according to them.

The Terminator comparison is not a good look because later editions of that movie were changed to credit Harlan Ellison.

ComScore/Screen Engine PostTrak numbers from last night are 4 stars for all audiences with parents liking it more than kids under 12, 4 1/2 to 3 1/2 stars. Females watched more than men, 56% to 44%. Same percents for moms vs. fathers in terms of audience make-up. Females over 25 are the biggest quad at 29%, females under 25 at 27% with males under/over 25 at 22% each.

That's an interesting under 12 kid score, especially considering that was the uber-fan opening night...that might be a huge player in legs, b/c if kids don't like it, families won't bother seeing it...

Do women watch more movies than men?

According to the  MPAA it's split pretty much according to population % in the US

W/M 51/49.  Men buy more tickets though 47/53

Women though tend to have a greater % for animated films and these Disney re-makes

IMO it actually is, because Cameron initially denied it and was sued. IIRC they also dragged their feet on inserting Ellison’s credit to his satisfaction, and I think it wasn’t until 1991 that they finally put that big-ass acknowledgment right before the end credits.

Kids don't tend to like anything that reminds them of "learning" - (according to my kids), that's boring...

The realism and what some have termed "nature documentary" look could actually backfire in the under 12s...and leave this movie as a parent-pull movie...

Definitely not a good look for Disney I mean.

IIRC, Mathew Broderick thought he was playing Kimba at first.

The presence or lack of specific elements doesn't mean there wasn't something hinky going on. TLK was a single movie, while Kimba had three manga volumes and 52 TV eps.

Plus another 52 that aired in 89-90 in Japan. While it was deffo a different time for anime exposure and knowledge, people in the industry would be more likely to be familiar. And anime was already getting hugely popular. 95 was the same year as the Ghost in the Shell movie.
