OK, how do you explain this? How is a movie based on a comic book not a comic book movie?

To me its

1. is it representing the character like in the comics (not totally, but at least the gist) or are only a few details to recognise, the story only very loosely connected. LaurenceBrolivier listed quite some points why I'd not add Blade as such

If its only a few points... see 2.

2. I look for what is the main Genre, the first genre I'd name if someone would ask me to describe a movie / its genres.

Like sometimes a story gets changed so much, its now e.g. a horror movie first, and a CBM only as a lower weighted genre. If in my POV CBM is lets say only on #3 or lower, I'd not even think for a second about it as a CBM

3a Source material is for me only relevant if the source material is still ~ there, like e.g all Matt Damon Bourne movies are great spy-action movies, but not Bourne movies at all, as the essence of the books is absent, even does mostly the opposite of what made the books so unique. The only Bourne movie I'd call so, is Bourne Legacy, as it gets the gist of the books, beside the main character not even be The name giving character of the series.

3b If a CBM is about a SH (implied e.g. per title...), and then the movie drifts away from that SH character, depending on how much, then that too can loose the CBM categorisation for me.

Worth thinking about which movies are based on comic books. I'm sure the same set of superhero films will grab every spot on the list but it's worth bearing in mind these are some CBMs eligible for this list:

Diary of a Teenage Girl

Oldboy

Road to Perdition

A History of Violence

Men in Black

Blue is the warmest colour

Nausicaa of the valley of the Wind

So I am assuming that the Watchmen will not count because it's a graphic novel?

Same difference 😛 But Watchmen was a comic before it was combined  into a graphic novel anyway :)

Lots of Ghibli movies actually.

yeah I guessed that but i was just reading an article and it only mentioned that one, couldn't be arsed to go through the Studio Ghibli catalogue to check which ones are original and which ones are adapted from maanga.

I really need to watch more but I hate watching subtitled films at home. I can manage it fine in the cinema. I've only seen three of them, and seen them in the cinema. The tale of princess kaguya, and two others... I am embarrassed to say I am not sure which ones they are, even though i bought a ticket to see them, and it was recently.

All of the studio ghibli films look the same and I get easily confused.

Kaguya looks nothing like the others.

I don't think i've ever watched a dubbed film in my life. Personally, I don't see the point. If i am going to watch a film, I will watch it in the original language used and intended by the filmmakers.

@Tower obviously Kaguya is very different.

They pretty much all look the same to me. That's not a dig at Ghibli, it's just due to Anime being completely foreign to me, so to someone who knows nothing about it, it all looks similar. I understand the point above about WDAS, i dont disagree. but it's like if I listened to rap music, it all sounds the same to me. or if I look at some black and white films they all look the same.

I am sure if I started watching japanese animation i would distinguish them. I'd know if i had watched My Neighbour Totoro because it has a big distinct creature lol.

One of the ones I've seen had a flying castle... but Ghibli has done two of these so I'm not sure if it is Castle in the Sky or Howl's moving castle. or maybe i've seen both. Lol.
