Holy Shiiiiittttt!

It's going well past 10 billion IMO.
Just with what's left with Lion King (700m), Toy Story 4 (120m) and Aladdin (50m) will bring it close to 8.5 billion.

Maleficent was huge overseas and made 758 million WW.

Even if it drops by almost half, should still gross 400 million WW. That brings the total up to close to 9 billion before Frozen even hits theatres, and that should do close to 1.5 billion. Almost 10.5 billion even before SW9 opens... DAMN

The Farewell is shaping up to be a nice little breakout indie story in a year that hasn't had any so far. A total identical to A24's Eighth Grade from the same release spot last year is happening, at the very least.

Confused. Wasn't this already at 1.936b+ last Sunday?

Yeah and it was at  $1,936,600,00  as of Thursday

Though it's at the point where OS updates are going to come in batches but not necessarily weekly or even monthly.

Even domestically they've been off.  Two weeks ago they were off about 600k and last week 300k between estimates and actuals.

I wasn't following BaTB numbers back then. How on earth it had $90mn 2nd weekend and then did "only" $504mn with under 50% drop.

Really low weekdays, though they weren't small. Just a Wend heavy period of the year.

B&tB vs TLK:

Owend: 174.75M vs 191.77M

Weekdays: 53.86M vs 83.48M

-> OWeek: 228.6M vs 275.25M

2nd Wend: 90.43M vs 75.5M

Weekdays: 28.88M vs 43M

-> 2nd Week: 119.31M vs 118.5M

Once Upon OW was skewed with 4PM previews. But under 35m minus previews is not great. Its BO was skewed heavily to LA and NYC.

There is no way to spin the The Lion King drop as expected. there was no overlap with Once Upon, it kept all PLF/Imax screens and still dropped hard. Incredibles 2 dropped 56% when Jurassic World 2 opened almost at 150m taking lots of PLF screens. This is way worse. It will not top 600m at this rate. Most probably looking at finishing around 550-575 range. Great numbers but disappointing legs for the genre.

Only Aladdin had a 30% drop. rest had just okish drops only.

People are aware that "Marvel vs. DC" as a phenomenon was basically entirely made up by people at Marvel & DC as a means to goose their paying marks into buying more copies of both publishers' comics? It's only as bad as it is now because the people in charge of the media reporting on this stuff were children who believed in it fully like it was WWF or WCW... and whose fandom is much more like professional wrestling fandom than anything else...

The studios aren't really competing with each other, and if one of the studios (or publishers) goes down the other will actually be hurt by the lack of competition and contrast. Nobody at either place wants that.... mostly because most people who work at the one place end up working at the other... and some work for both at the same time...

Actually, the pro wrestling thing is a good comparison. Eventually, WWF, who was scared of competition and whose endgame WAS to take out WCW, bought them entirely.... and you know what happened? WWF got crappier. Way crappier. And a lot of talent lost out...

This is not what Marvel Studios or DC Entertainment are doing to each other. They're not really in competition like that. They're both just trying to make money for their investors. They can both win without the other needing to lose.

Yeah it's far from a disaster or anything, but in my own opinion people are making a lot of excuses. Even in summer when weekends are depressed and weekdays are great, there was no reason for this to drop that much. Again, not a disastrous drop, but I think it's okay for some of us to have the opinion that it's disappointing.

Definitely lots of excuses for this drop.

Yeah I suppose so. Plus several people have mentioned the huge previews affects the weekend drop, which does make sense, since previews are just getting bigger and bigger as Thursday starts to become its own 4th day of the weekend.

I guess the box office is a vastly changing landscape right now, and I'm someone who doesn't handle change very well haha.

Unfortunately year I think we will see more 6 day OW and worse legs. Legs will continue to get worse. At least we have somegreat runs recently (TS4, Aladdin and JW3)
