Similar situation in December (unless something moves) with Aquaman, Mortal Engines and Spiderverse all releasing on the 14th, and only a bunch of small films on the 7th.

Mortal Engines is now being released on the 8th December I wouldn't be shocked if Spider-Verse has weekend previews the week before and Aquaman moves up to 12th December. 

 

Johnny English would have done well on this weekend, I agree but I imagine Universal didn't want it to clash with Night School.

Venom is also rated 15, cutting out family attendance, so that will limit the audience and likely give Johnny English the upper hand.

 

I also imagine the reviews for Venom will be quite damaging.

The reviews for Johnny English aren’t exactly glowing either but I imagine it’s critic proof

Venom being 15 means nothing, Suicide Squad was a 15 and that didn't slow it down at all.

The BBFC seems to give PG-13 films that are a bit gory 15, happened with The Mummy last tear. 

 

I saw House with the Clock in its Wall and I don't get how that's a 12A. It's PG at best.

It would have made more as a 12A. A comic book film being a 15 doesn’t stop it being a hit (Deadpool 1&2, and as you say, Suicide Squad, are examples of that), but cutting off a sizeable portion of your audience undeniably means that it’ll make less than it could have had it been open to families. Particularly in the case of Venom where Sony are hoping to catch the MCU audience. I’m surprised they didn’t cut it to be honest.

But then on the other side, people who wouldn't see a normal superhero movie might be attracted to an "edgier" option.

I just saw on Twitter that Vue won't show it (yet) because of a negotiation confllict with WB. Isn't that a major chain?

Vue is one of the biggest chains in the U.K so it's definitely going to have some sort of impact. I can't see ASIB until vue show it or I can pay 3x the price at the local arthouse.

It sounds similar to what happened with Cineworld and Entertainment Films where they didn't show The Hateful Eight but interesting that Vue is still trying to negotiate rather than not showing it altogether

At cinema for Venom now, and honestly the cinema hasn't been this busy since Avengers came out. Like I know it's primetime but still every single seat is taken At my usually quite theatre
