'London Has Fallen' tops UK box office with $4.5m debut

Fox’s Kung Fu Panda 3 previews strongly; Universal’s Hail, Caesar! opens with $2m (£1.43m); eOne’s Spotlight receives a post-Oscar boost of 69%.

LIONSGATE

Overcoming some savage reviews, London Has Fallendethroned Deadpool to top the UK box office on debut.

Lionsgate’s action sequel scored a strong $4.5m (£3.2m) opening, including $724,000 (£511,336) in previews, from its 510 sites for a healthy $8,888 (£6,276) site average. Its Fri-Sun tally of $3.8m (£2.69m) would have also seen it land top spot.

The opening is almost £1m ahead of Olympus Has Fallenwhich bowed to $3.2m (£2.25m), including $923,000 (£652,000) in previews, from its 453 sites, going on to take $8.6m (£6.1m).

Barring a dramatic collapse, London Has Fallen should comfortably pass that tally, even if the arrival of Kung Fu Panda 3 this weekend will mean its stay at number one is shortlived.

Also for Lionsgate, The Choice posted a UK debut of $195,000 (£137,392) from its 205 sites.

That marks the lowest debut for a Nicholas Sparks adaptation, although it’s worth noting that The Choicealso received the smallest release site-wise.

FOX

It won’t officially be in the chart until next week, butKung Fu Panda 3 is off to a promising start at the UK box office.

Fox’s threequel banked a non-final $2.2m (£1.57m) in previews on Saturday and Sunday which would have been good enough for second spot this weekend. It opens nationwide this Friday [March 11].

Also for Fox, Deadpool fell 50% on its way to a $2.1m (£1.5m) fourth weekend for a terrific $48.2m (£34.1m) to date. It is now the sixth biggest superhero film of all time, with Iron Man 3’s $52.4m (£37m) still an achievable target.

Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Road Chip added $759,000 (£535,760) for $21.7m (£15.34m), while The Revenant boosted 1% post-Oscars to take a further $476,000 (£336,114) for an excellent $31.9m (£22.5m) to date.

On its UK bow, The Other Side Of The Door could only scare up a non-final $360,000 (£253,871) from its 336 sites, and will likely struggle to hold onto its sites this coming weekend.

UNIVERSAL

Hail, Caesar! charted third with an opening of $2m (£1.43m) from its 494 sites through Universal.

That marks the fourth-best debut for the Coen Brothers at the UK box office, but the third-best Fri-Sun tally asIntolerable Cruelty’s $2.2m (£1.56m) from 380 sites included $328,000 (£231,844) in previews.

True Grit is currently the Coens best-ever performer with $12m (£8.46m), and Hail, Caesar! will require some robust midweek performances and weekend holds if it’s to challenge that.

Also for Universal, Dad’s Army is up to $11.5m (£8.09m) following a $161,000 (£114,005) fifth weekend, whileSecret In Their Eyes is only at $297,000 (£209,449) after ten days in play. The original grossed $1.1m (£800,000) in its run.

SONY

Grimsby followed up its disappointing opening with a $1.1m (£800,000) second weekend as it dropped to fourth.

Sony’s action comedy is now up to $5.1m (£3.57m) and is likely to end its run as the lowest-grossing performer for a Sacha Baron Cohen creation. Ali G Indahouse is currently his smallest take on $14.6m (£10.3m) back in 2002.

Also for Sony, Goosebumps has now spooked up $12m (£8.5m) after five weeks in play.

WARNER BROS

In its third week, Warner Bros’ comedy How To Be Single grossed $756,000 (£534,000) for a solid $6.7m (£4.7m) to date.

Also for Warner Bros, audiences avoided Truth, which unsurprisingly struggled on its UK debut as it took only $37,000 (£26,000) from 118 sites for a weak $312 (£220) site average, although it was unlikely to have had full showtimes throughout the weekend.

EONE

Following its Oscar Best Picture win, eOne’s Spotlightboosted 69% to add $468,000 (£330,388) for $7.7m (£5.4m) after six weeks in play.

ICON FILM DISTRIBUTION

The Forest posted a hefty drop of almost 70% for a $179,000 (£126,162) second weekend and a ten-day tally of $1.2m (£816,320) through Icon Film Distribution.

STUDIOCANAL

After Brie Larson’s Oscar win, Studiocanal’s Roomboosted midweek but didn’t receive a bump over the weekend as it took an extra $85,000 (£59,714) for $5.3m (£3.77m) to date.

DOGWOOF

From its 26 sites through Dogwoof, Hitchcock/Truffautopened with $34,000 (£23,733) including $4,200 (£2,947) in previews.

VERTIGO RELEASING

Originally set for release last year with Koch Media, Vertigo Releasing opened Austrian horror Goodnight Mommy at 25 sites for an $18,000 (£12,995) UK debut.

UPCOMING RELEASES

This week sees saturation releases for eOne’s The Divergent Series: Allegiant (opens March 10), Fox’sKung Fu Panda 3 and Vertigo Releasing’s Fifty Shades Of Black.

Universal’s The Witch and Curzon Film World’sAnomalisa both receive wide releases, while Icon Film Distribution’s The Ones Below and Peccadillo Pictures’Next To Her are among the films receiving a limited release.

KFP3 did pretty decently with previews, I'm expecting it'll do about £4-5m with previews added in. I do wonder how Zootropolis will do in previews?

Don't think it is having previews.

we're doing terrible on Allegiant. Under London Has Fallen so far this weekend.

Kung Fu Panda is up a bit on last Saturday but not brilliant.

KFP3 is going to be hit hard by Zootropolis. Given that neither Divergent nor Insurgent have done great business here, it's not really surprising Allegiant isn't doing so hot.

Kung Fu Panda 3 posts chart-topping UK bow of around £4.9m, including previews.

The Divergent Series: Allegiant lands with estimated £1.9m, including previews, in the UK. Down on Insurgent, just ahead of Divergent.

Hail, Caesar! adds around £910k for £3.3m after ten days, while The Witch lands with estimated £450k from 179 sites.

Think that's the lowest opening for a KFP film as KFP did £6.1m including previews and KFP2 did £6.2m inc previews. Allegiant underperformed too.

Next week is Zootropolis previews, High Rise and 10 Cloverfield Lane. I expect KFP3 will be number 1 again although I wouldn't be surprised if Zootropolis manages good numbers in previews.

Zootropolis is topping £30m IMO. It is perfectly situated for school holidays. Previews plus opening could get close to £10m seeing as it opens over Easter weekend (basically a 5 day weekend).

Batman v Superman will have little impact on its gross, and KFP3 is hardly a giant. Plus, reviews are insane, wom will propel it over Easter break.

Not sure about £10m with previews but I wouldn't be surprised if it matches the OW plus previews of The Lego Movie which did £8m with previews, even matching Inside Out's OW would be great for a WDAS film. Easter weekend is going to be insane with this and BvS.

    FOX

After its healthy previews last week, Kung Fu Panda 3has landed top of the UK box office on debut.

Fox’s animated threequel grossed a non-final $6.8m (£4.76m), including $2.3m (£1.6m) in previews, from its 583 sites. It’s worth noting that its Fri-Sun tally of $4.6m (£3.17m) would have also seen it chart in first place.

However, that marks the lowest overall opening of the trilogy, down on Kung Fu Panda 2’s $8.9m (£6.19m) from 514 sites and Kung Fu Panda’s $8.7m (£6.06m) from 446 sites.

In terms of Fri-Sun tallies though, Kung Fu Panda 3’s $4.6m (£3.17m) is ahead of Kung Fu Panda 2’s $4.4m (£3.07m), although still down on the first film’s $6.3m (£4.38m).

Also for Fox, Deadpool dropped a slim 28% on its way to a $1.4m (£962,257) fifth weekend for an excellent $51.4m (£35.8m). It should still be able to overtake Iron Man 3’s $53.2m (£37m) as the fifth biggest superhero film of all time.

Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Road Chip has now overtaken Chipwrecked as the second biggest performer of the series. The fourth outing added $425,000 (£295,332) for $22.6m (£15.71m) to date.

The Revenant and The Other Side Of The Door stand at $32.9m (£22.86m) and $778,000 (£541,112), respectively.

    EONE

The Divergent Series: Allegiant got off to a sluggish start at the UK box office even though it charted second.

eOne’s continuation of the young adult franchise took a non-final $2.6m (£1.83m), including $377,000 (£262,069) in previews, from its 528 sites. Its Fri-Sun tally of $2.3m (£1.57m) would have seen it chart third behind London Has Fallen.

That’s slightly ahead of Divergent’s $2.5m (£1.77m) but that was achieved from fewer sites (423) and without previews. It’s some way short of The Divergent Series: Insurgent’s $4.2m (£2.94m), including $554,000 (£384,965) in previews, from 497 sites.

Also for eOne, Oscar winner Spotlight dug up a further $252,000 (£174,979) for $8.4m (£5.85m) after seven weeks in play.

    LIONSGATE

London Has Fallen has already outgrossed Olympus Has Fallen at the UK box office.

Lionsgate’s action sequel held well to enjoy a $2.6m (£1.8m) second weekend as it dropped to third, and now stands at $9.3m (£6.44m) after 11 days in play to overtake Olympus Has Fallen’s $8.8m (£6.1m) result.

London Has Fallen now stands a decent chance to hit the £10m mark given a lack of direct competition opening this weekend.

Also for Lionsgate, The Choice unsurprisingly struggled following its soft opening, taking just $35,000 (£24,391) for a ten-day tally of $382,000 (£265,807).

    UNIVERSAL

Rounding off this week’s top five was Universal’s Hail, Caesar! with a $1.2m (£857,682) second weekend.

The Coen Brothers’ latest is now up to $4.6m (£3.24m) and will soon overtake O Brother, Where Are Thou?’s $4.77m (£3.32m) as the duo’s fifth best UK performer. Whether Hail, Caesar! can get close to True Grit’s $12.1m (£8.46m) remains to be seen.

Also for Universal, critically acclaimed horror The Witchconjured up $641,000 (£446,151), including $16,000 (£11,028) in previews, from its 179 sites at a $3,576 (£2,492) site average.

It will hope to connect midweek and avoid the usual fast-burn nature of genre films in the UK.

Dad’s Army has amassed $11.8m (£8.24m) to date.

    SONY

In its third weekend, Sony’s Grimsby dropped a further 41% on its way to $683,000 (£475,000) for a disappointing $6.5m (£4.5m) to date.

    WARNER BROS

Dropping just over 30% in its fourth week, Warner Bros’ comedy How To Be Single added an extra $479,000 (£333,000) for a solid $7.8m (£5.43m) running total.

    CURZON ARTIFICIAL EYE

Landing tenth on its UK bow, Curzon Artificial Eye’sAnomalisa recorded a $320,000 (£222,282) debut, including previews, from its 80 sites.

That marks a solid $3,996 (£2,779) site average and the film will look to prosper midweek given its older-skewing audience. Charlie Kaufman’s directorial debutSynecdoche, New York grossed $762,000 (£530,000) in its UK run.

    VERTIGO RELEASING

Fifty Shades Of Black whipped up a soft $119,000 (£82,614) from its 117 sites through Vertigo Releasing.

That’s down on the $221,000 (£153,805) debut of director Michael Tiddes’ horror spoof with star Marlon Wayans, A Haunted House, although that was released in 226 sites.

    ICON FILM DISTRIBUTION

After three weeks in play, Icon Film Distribution’s The Forest stands at $1.3m (£921,595).

Also for Icon, The Ones Below posted a UK bow of $10,000 (£6,971) from its 11 sites.

    UPCOMING RELEASES

This week sees saturation releases for Entertainment Film Distributors’ The Boy and Paramount’s 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Sony’s Risen, Studiocanal’s High-Rise, Signature Entertainment’s Norm Of The North and Sony’s Rock The Kasbah all receive wide releases, while Picturehouse Entertainment’s Marguerite is among the films receiving a limited release.

Incredible total for Deadpool. It'll probably end up just short of £40m with around £38m or so, 5th biggest superhero film ever. Never would have predicted anywhere near that a few months ago.

Next weekend should be one of the biggest ever. Good Friday is a bank holiday, and so is Easter Monday, so essentially a 4 day weekend. Plus, it's the start of the school holidays. I'm thinking £13-14m for BvS, and around £16m with bank holiday Monday. Could go higher. Age of Ultron opened to £18m 4 day, and Jurassic World made £19.4m 4 day. TDKR had a 3 day OW of £14.4m.

Zootopia will probably open around £4-5m, similar to other WDA openings (Wreck-it-Ralph £4.5m, Frozen £4.7m, BH6 £3.8m), but with previews and bank holiday Monday added on, it could be over £8m. As for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, the first is still hugely popular, and it's perfect counter-programming, so £4-5m seems like a safe bet.
