This is as consensus of a pick as is possible on this forum. 54 of 62 lists had included the movie, and 38 lists - more than 50%- had it in the top 5. 

 

The Matrix is a lot of things - Keanu's comeback, the Wachowski's coming into prominence, the popularization of bullet time among them. But above all, it is a damn good kick ass movie which raises a lot of questions for the audience. Becoming a slave to machines has become our reality now as everyone is always on their phones or tablets. The Wachowskis have tried to raise this point again in their future movies but not half as effectively as they managed to do it here. Too bad about the sequels, but if they ever announce The Matrix: Rebooted I will be there opening day.

OMFG Phantom Menace really missed out!

The Matrix is one of the best movies of all time. It is a beautiful reimagining of Plato's Allegory and a film that is vitally important to today's society. I feel a connection to it as a man of faith. It deserves #1.

It's a real shame Run Lola Run didn't sneak in. It was pretty close, too. People really need to see that one.

 

I have no luck with getting foreign films into yearly lists because The Celebration got #26 or #27 on the 1998 list.

Maybe Perfect Blue was disqualified because it premiered at a 1997 film festival in Canada.

That would disqualify lots of movies though.
