I think it's better to use the Internet movie database. That is a much more comprehensive site then using box office mojo. So if the original release date is listed on the Internet movie database as 1989 that is what we will use. And I will put that in the title so that everybody knows going forward.

Cool. So take your picks (and movies to catch up with) out of these basically.

I'll have to look into this list tonight.

Quick question I've never seen the Abyss if I do watch it is it best to go with the original or extended cut?

Extended cut. It adds a lot more character development and good scenes that it basically made the original cut null and void for me.

This will be fun - great year for me - had my first child in July of '89 & he is probably older than many on this board.  Here are some of my faves:

Parenthood -probably my fave of that year

Say Anything

Field of Dreams - still tear up watching this beautiful movie

Heathers

The 'Burbs - I just love this crazy movie

When Harry Met Sally

Steel Magnolias

Sex, Lies & Videotape - an Indie that everyone was talking about

Sea of Love - Al Pacino & Ellen Barkin thriller - word of mouth was great on this one

Crimes & Misdemeanors - one of my fave Woody movies

Let It Ride - I love this movie & all the crazy gambling characters - Dreyfuss is fantastic

The Abyss - watch it all the time - Ed Harris - need I say more?

Immediate Family - Glenn Close & Mary Stuart Masterson - I found it touching

Drugstore Cowboy - loved Matt Dillon since I was 16 - he is fantastic in this

Major League - great baseball comedy

I've seen more 1989 films than I've realized so I should easily manage a ten-film list. I'm really happy because I'll be able to support my favorites.

This is a film with cool action and a fluctuating premise. I remember watching it when I was little; I think the film was randomly coming on a channel like HBO. I had really only seen kids films before this so it was a new experience. I learned a lot about firefighting through this film. If's there's any film I'm going to do an FYC for, it'll be this one.

Its one of the few movies with strong romance parts I actually like, in this case a lot. See my first chart post, including because it had Audrey Hepburn in her last role a few years before she lost her fight against cancer in it.

I really like her as she was in a few of my favourite movies and some other reasons.

(and them training with the red sand... 😉 )

Here is most of what is in the top 200 movies, after i took the liberty to go through the trailers.  I spent about 4 hours on YouTube with the trailers and rated them in order of how i want to see them.  (for comparison, 2018-2019 would be almost all 7's)

I bolded the ones that were in the top 30 at the 1989 box office.  I would have thought the majority of the romantic comedies was a test for hate , as they made all the money, and looked like I would have wanted to cry from their reign over the masses.

Spoiler

Dead Poets Society, Parenthood, Ghostbusters 2, Indiana Jones 3, Batman,
Christmas Vacation, Pet Semetary, The Abyss
A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child
Halloween 5, Akira

Skin Deep is one everyone needs to see. There's an epic scene that's has to be seen to be believed.

I have to watch that again - don't remember it too well but I love Blake Edwards movies.
