Are we really doing this? CM Mon-Sun week was 7M, bolstered by Endgame. It collapsed afterward.

TS4’s week was 9.5M. Even if it got 0 expansion (it will get expanded) it would add roughly 2x that for high 430s at least.

The Endgame effect and summer make it totally incomparable on anything but the surface level (similar weekend magnitude, similar cume).

Aladdin now sits at a terrific 3.86 multiplier - which is, again, mighty impressive in my book given the inflated 3-day opening weekend due to Memorial Day. This weekend's loss of theatres and screens really hurt it, so I don't think it will be able to match or exceed American Sniper or Inside Out on the multiplier front, unless it has an exceptionally healthy Labour Day weekend boost.

Toy Story 4 also just cracked the top 20 multipliers for 70+M Friday openers, with a 3.47 multiplier. It will also finish with an impressive multiplier, when all is said and done - particularly for the fourth instalment and largest opening weekend of the franchise. Toy Story 3 opened almost 10 years ago, and Toy Story 4 will come close to the third film's multiplier.

Best Multipliers Ever for $70+ Million Opening Films (Friday Openers):

  1. Avatar (2009) — 77.0 million (9.73)
  2. Finding Nemo (2003) — 70.3 million (4.84)
  3. Zootopia (2016) — 75.1 million (4.55)
  4. Wonder Woman (2017) — 103.3 million (4.00)
  5. Inside Out (2015) — 90.4 million (3.94)
  6. American Sniper (2015) — 89.3 million (3.92)
  7. Aladdin (2019) — 91.5 million (3.86)^
  8. Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) — 248.0 million (3.78)
  9. Toy Story 3 (2010) — 110.3 million (3.76)
  10. The Incredibles (2004) — 70.5 million (3.71)
  11. Despicable Me 3 (2017) — 72.4 million (3.65)
  12. Finding Dory (2016) — 135.1 million (3.60)
  13. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) — 84.6 million (3.58)
  14. The Secret Life of Pets (2016) — 104.4 million (3.53)
  15. The Jungle Book (2016) — 103.3 million (3.53)
  16. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) — 94.3 million (3.53)
  17. Harry Potter and the Sorceror’s Stone (2001) — 90.3 million (3.52)
  18. Spider-Man (2002) — 114.8 million (3.52)
  19. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) — 73.6 million (3.51)
  20. Toy Story 4 (2019) — 120.9 million (3.47)^
  21. Black Panther (2018) — 202.0 million (3.47)
  22. Skyfall (2012) — 88.4 million (3.44)

Peace,

Mike

20 hours ago, The Panda said:

They can keep John Wick going as long as they keep being entertaining

You mean "as long as they keep making money".

Studios almost always push a franchise too far as far as quality goes,;but as long as they make money studio does not really care the much about quality.

I just realised Men in Black Internationals gross and loss is probably very similar to Ghostbusters (domestic share $50m lower and minus China, where GB didn’t release, it’s worldwide gross is $25m lower) where’s all the non stop media attention and attacks on this one then?

Trolls suck.

TS4 will easily win with 440+ 🤣

Toy Story 4 just made $4.53M this weekend for a nearly $420M total - even without any Labour Day boost there is no way it only ends with $427-429M, that's only another 7-9M.

Peace,

Mike

Aladdin now sits at a terrific 3.86 multiplier - which is, again, mighty impressive in my book given the inflated 3-day opening weekend due to Memorial Day. This weekend's loss of theatres and screens really hurt it, so I don't think it will be able to match or exceed American Sniper or Inside Out on the multiplier front, unless it has an exceptionally healthy Labour Day weekend boost.

Toy Story 4 also just cracked the top 20 multipliers for 70+M Friday openers, with a 3.47 multiplier. It will also finish with an impressive multiplier, when all is said and done - particularly for the fourth instalment and largest opening weekend of the franchise. Toy Story 3 opened almost 10 years ago, and Toy Story 4 will come close to the third film's multiplier.

Best Multipliers Ever for $70+ Million Opening Films (Friday Openers):

  1. Avatar (2009) — 77.0 million (9.73)
  2. Finding Nemo (2003) — 70.3 million (4.84)
  3. Zootopia (2016) — 75.1 million (4.55)
  4. Wonder Woman (2017) — 103.3 million (4.00)
  5. Inside Out (2015) — 90.4 million (3.94)
  6. American Sniper (2015) — 89.3 million (3.92)
  7. Aladdin (2019) — 91.5 million (3.86)^
  8. Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) — 248.0 million (3.78)
  9. Toy Story 3 (2010) — 110.3 million (3.76)
  10. The Incredibles (2004) — 70.5 million (3.71)
  11. Despicable Me 3 (2017) — 72.4 million (3.65)
  12. Finding Dory (2016) — 135.1 million (3.60)
  13. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) — 84.6 million (3.58)
  14. The Secret Life of Pets (2016) — 104.4 million (3.53)
  15. The Jungle Book (2016) — 103.3 million (3.53)
  16. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) — 94.3 million (3.53)
  17. Harry Potter and the Sorceror’s Stone (2001) — 90.3 million (3.52)
  18. Spider-Man (2002) — 114.8 million (3.52)
  19. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) — 73.6 million (3.51)
  20. Toy Story 4 (2019) — 120.9 million (3.47)^
  21. Black Panther (2018) — 202.0 million (3.47)
  22. Skyfall (2012) — 88.4 million (3.44)

Peace,

Mike

And it seems like no one is going to touch that 9.73x multiplier number. Damn not even Cameron will do that again.

Haha, fair. I can actually remember predicting 440 for CM at about this point in the run since I was hoping the Endgame boost would be sustained. If only 😢

Still a great finish, of course.

As a Pixar fan too as well as CM fan, it's a win win situation. It seems like CM will finish 5th for the year domestically after Episode 9, finishes with a little over 700m domestically. ;)

Thanks for sharing this!

Wonder Woman had a truly impressive leggy run. I love that.

Best ever legs for a film opening to more than $100m.

Incredible.

I just realized that if you look at adjusted PTA of true FSS, the record OWs of the 2010s have seen a pretty mild rise from the record OWs of the 1980s.

Not too surprising I guess, but that 500M OW is coming sooner than a lot of people realize.

Captain Marvel had 420m at week 9 with similar 4.2m weekend. And TS4 is at 419.7m at week 8 with 4.5m weekend. This race is tight but I think TS4 is going to win it with 427m-429m, with no major release until IT2.

Captain Marvel at that time was boosted by Endgame; fell right outta cliff from next weekend. Not happening for TS4. With Labor Day weekend expansion pending; and Incredibles 2 being the best comp,

I2 did $4.98mn in 8th weekend, to $25mn afterwards, TS4 shall be able to do $22.5mn Approx. A better placement of Labor day weekend may lead to $23-25mn as well. So I don't see it going below $440mn, with all the chance for $450mn.
