Weekend Thread - Good Boys 21.4m OW, other openers not worth mentioning

Recommended Posts

Good Boys should leg it out to $65-70M. Nice to see a summer that seemed to have more flops/disappointments than usual coming to a close with a mini-surprise.

Otherwise, oof. 47 Meters Down 2 did alright but Angry Birds 2 is the latest animated sequel implosion (seems to be tough to be an animated sequel unless you're Disney) while Blinded by the Light (unfortunately) and Bernadette are the blips they were expected to be.

Holdovers looking at acceptable drops for the most part. With two barren weeks (including a 4-day holiday) coming up we're bound to see some really nice holds.

Once Upon a Time PTA looking to drop just 10% or so from last weekend. Should keep doing great until It 2 at least. Good to see it sustaining the audience's interest, this is something a lot of adult releases that may or may not be divisive never get a chance to do cause they don't open high enough and are gone from theaters before you know it.

Interesting tidbit: Toy Story 4 is now officially the highest-rated G film ever domestically, beating out Lion King '94, although Lion King is inflated by its two re-releases. Obviously, on its own, both Finding Nemo and Toy Story 3 beat the movie out. Still, impressive.

I have to imagine this whole Bruce Lee controversy among other things has only boosted interest. Not surprised it's holding on so well when it's generating so much discussion (which will also be key in it sticking around as a major awards player).

Oh god this Gerard Butler film is going to be #1 two weeks in a row isn’t it? Lol

Why the hell is Ready or Not opening on Wednesday? I can’t see it going over $5m.

Probably to try and spread good WOM before the weekend arrives.

I don't get how the theater chain think that Hollywood should drop 1000 theaters

Movies usually don't perform similarly in all areas and theaters.  Its a big country.  From the drop compared to last week (40%+) it looks like it kept most of the theaters where it was performing strongest.

5 new releases plus it dropped most of the theaters where it wasn't making much to begin with. Shouldn't come as a shock to anyone it's playing much better in metropolitan areas than it is everywhere else.

Actually, there is a lot of to discuss. World doesnt end with Superhero/Disney movies sweetheart

Evidently not, since people haven’t been inclined to discuss it much. Superhero/Disney movies tend to be a lot more exciting BO-wise.

If only there was some word that I could have used to clearly convey that this was a general trend and not an absolute rule. Perhaps something beginning with T and ending with E-N-D...
