How long did it take for Mulan to become free on Disney+?

Do you guys expect Raya and BW to get the same treatment?

Mulan and Raya are both 3 months until they are on Disney+ for no extra cost (there is some regional differences though I think Latin America gets Raya after a month but they weren’t launched for Mulan)

Have no idea how Disney is going to interpret what is happening this weekend and how it influences what they do with Black Widow.

It's actually really funny because speaking as somebody whose job is to check threads daily and moderate activity, I can only think of a couple people who eagerly love to dogpile WB/HBO Max/whatever. If anything, there's legions of people whose entire personality seems to just be "Disney bad". Anytime a Disney movie underperforms even slightly, the knives are out against them and threads sometimes go on and on about whether it's ethical to watch a Lion King remake or whatever in theaters. It's even weirder still since a lot of people were championing Tom and Jerry's opening, almost as if people here...like seeing good box office numbers regardless the studio.

Really, the Raya dogpiling that's been happening (and yes, it's happening way more than any championing or defensiveness that people pretend to act is going on) is sadly par for the course, both for a low opener and a Disney release. Not sure why WB stans/"Disney bad" personality types are acting as if one or two defenses from randos means the majority are acting like the movie's a smash success, but they seem to get angry whenever somebody mildly critiques a DC movie's box office or just...does their job as a reporter, so I guess that's to be expected. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

At the risk of a stern response I’ll say that I really liked Raya and supported it. In fact, I’ve shared my opinion and stand by it that Raya was much better than Tom & Jerry. I have likewise supported the MCU movies and gone to the movies as a paying customer to watch them. In fact, I have never come here or on any other site with an agenda to repeatedly trash movies for their box office. Nor do I let some  allegiance to a certain studio or franchise lead me to  trash movies that are from a different studio/franchise. I don’t think that qualifies as analysis. It qualifies as hating. I usually just state my opinion and keep it moving. There are others who feel the need to bash WB/HBOMAX or sometimes other studios that are not Disney. It’s apparent that we’re working from different perspectives, so with respect I think we’ll just have to agree to disagree.

I am happy to see that no one is bashing Raya or Disney here. People are looking at the landscape and seeing what could have been done differently to maximize its potential during these challenging times and that’s why I post here. It’s for thoughtful analysis from certain posters without agendas.

They've confirmed Raya will be free on Disney+ on June 4.

If I'm being honest, 3 more months really isn't that long of a wait, but I've gotten used to seeing almost every WDAS film since Wreck-It Ralph in theatres within the first 3 weeks (I didn't catch Frozen until a month in, but I still managed to sneak in a viewing of Ralph Breaks the Internet and Frozen II on opening weekend just before finals), and I was really looking forward to seeing this at the nearest drive-in when they announced this was still coming to theatres, but that last part really didn't pan out.

My ranking of modern WDAS

1. Moana

2. Zootopia

3. Raya

4. Tangled

5. Pooh

6. Big Hero 6

7. Frozen II

8. Frozen

9. Wreck-it Ralph

10. Princess and the Frog

11. Ralph Breaks the Internet

For the record I at least like all these movies. Copying Jat I’d say 1-2 are excellent 3-6 great and 7-11 good.

Those Atlantis comparisons may have been more right than we thought.

Not really, no.

Atlantis was, for the most part, a straight-up animated action movie. All of its advertising and marketing focused heavily on the action and adventure aspects, and the movie itself was little different. That's not to say Atlantis didn't have elements of comedy, but they weren't the main selling point. It was also, rated PG, which was virtually unheard of at the time. Nowadays, when everything from Minions to Frozen is rated PG, it's hard to remember that there was a time when this rating was unusual for an animated movie. Atlantis came out in 2001, when the majority of animated movies were rated G, and PG-rated live-action blockbusters weren't uncommon. In other words, PG back then was more or less the equivalent of PG-13 today. More to the point, the target audience of Atlantis was specifically teenage and late pre-teen boys, an audience that Disney had historically had difficulty attracting. And that, as it turned out, was what doomed the movie.

Raya and the Last Dragon, on the other hand, feels closer in tone to more recent Disney animationsAs I explained before, its early trailers did imply that it was going to be a serious action movie in the vein of Atlantis, but its later promotions have focused heavily on comedy, and the movie itself is much more humorous and light-hearted, though still with plenty of drama and action, than its early trailers implied. If I had to pick any specific movie to compare it to, it would be Moana-- not just because of the central premise of a princess seeking out a magical being to restore her homeland, but because of the similar blend of comedy and drama. Also like Moana, the title character of Raya is an unofficial "Disney Princess", indicating that it is aimed at the same target audience as movies like Moana and Frozen, rather than the teenage-male audience of Atlantis.

So, if the pandemic hadn't been a thing and this had gotten a regular theatrical release, how big of an opening weekend would it have most likely gotten?

I would say around $35-40M perhaps. Tom & Jerry probably around $50-60M.

I checked this out tonight and enjoyed it quite a bit.  It bites off a little more than it can chew story-wise (to the point where I wondered what it might have been like as a big TV series rather than as a movie), but it has a lot of heart and the animation is gorgeous.

I'm assuming the movie would have kept it's original November 25 date in that case, So it would have been a Thanksgiving opening with what I would guess to be $55M/$80M for the 3/5-day weekends and then leg out to $200-250M, if Moana, Coco and Ralph Breaks the Internet were any indication.

One thing I feel studios aren't really getting is that these streaming service/revenue they can/should replace with TV and Home media and attack Netflix.

Instead they are trying to replace theaters and attack cinemas. Even the normal discourse is such only.

Way Warner and Disney are going, that may be the case may be, by spoiling the audience giving movie day  and date to stream at home. Truth be told, I am never setting my foot in theater for non-event film if they keep spoon-feeding me the films at home.

Deadline: Raya‘s sour B.O. can largely be attributed to No. 3 exhibitor Cinemark, as well as Harkins, and Canada’s Cineplex blocking the title over Disney’s refusal to budge on terms give the title’s availability on Disney+

So now there's an explanation, it has nothing to do with demand from consumers, appeal or anything like that....demand has been artificially reduced and consumers blocked from watching it in some places.

Quote

Deadline: Still, Raya‘s release is striking plenty of fear for rival distributors and for exhibition. That’s particularly after Disney CEO Bob Chapek’s recent remarks Monday at a virtual investment conference hosted by Morgan Stanley in which he said things like, “The consumer is probably more impatient than they’ve ever been before,” and that given how the pandemic has brought a number of movies into the home, he’s not sure “there’s going back” to the way films were theatrically distributed prior. Even though Chapek said, “We certainly don’t want to do anything like cut the legs off a theatrical exhibition run,” many are concerned all of this is code for Disney moving forward with their theatrical day and date Disney+ model, and that Black Widow may emulate the same distribution path as Raya on May 7.

Well, after what some chains did to Raya I really hope Disney is gonna move forward and keep giving consumers MORE options.

I know it's an unpopular opinion here and I understand your fears dear BOT members, I respect that but if theater chains decide to go anti-consumer and block movies then Disney should democratize the stuff to bypass their attempts.

I was starting to be ok with movies going to theaters first and then streaming 45 to 60 days after opening day but after such a despicable behavior it's harder to support theaters.
