I thought I might not have seen even 10 musicals but then realised every Bollywood film ever is musical, so its gonna be hard. I looked at IMDB, they have animations in Musicals too, so that change it even more. I have officially watched 60 musicals per IMDb, which is definitely true as I have seen at least 400 Bollywood musicals. Baahubali 2 ffs has 6 songs in it, does it qualify as Musical?

Yes. Six musical numbers in a movie qualifies as a musical. As does any animated movie that has multi songs / numbers. So like 101 Dalmatians is not a musical. It just has one really, really good song.  But Anastasia is a musical, since it has at least five or six numbers. Have fun!

Wiki says,

Musical film is a film genre in which songs sung by the characters are interwoven into the narrative, sometimes accompanied by dancing.

 

Here's an attempt. The list will be basically my top rated Indian films minus the films I think music wasn't that big part of it because I don't think there are many films with "music not interwoven into the narrative, sometimes accompanied by dancing". That will still leave many greats, as I haven't watched even 10% of them.

God damn all these Indian members (or at least Bollywood fans, I am kind of assuming so apologies if wrong), choosing to maintain the integrity of the list by only picking pure musicals instead of mere movies that have a bunch of singing numbers. 

 

Wouldn't see this kind of restraint if First Avenger had a second song in it, or if Jack randomly serenaded Rose at some point. 

 

I mean it's noble and understandable and all that nonsense, but I want Kal Ho Naa Ho and Lagaan in the top 50 dagnabbit.

Just watched The Red Shoes, and it's definitely going on my list. Might even be in my top ten. Not a huge of ballets, but the ones in this film are so hypnotic, and moving, and they match the overall tone of the story too, which is incredibly engaging. It's perfect.

For me it's the overall package, the quality of movie and song and/or dance. 

 

In revisiting some movies and watching some for the first time I've found quite a few movies have one but lacking in the other.  But I'm still finding it hard to prune it to 50.
