I never imagined identify a musical film is such a challenging work as there are so many ambiguity  in defining musicals.

Is Bohemian or La Vien Rose a musical?

Is 3 idiots a musical?

It depends on how many of the songs are performative as opposed to soundtrack songs.

I really like Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and the music in it but really only 2 songs are performative (singing and dancing), the rest are soundtrack  So not a musical under this lists terms and not on my list.

I think, personally, a really good example is Meet Me In St Louis. I mean, the movie is directed by Vincente Minnelli, produced by Arthur Freed, and stars Judy Garland. It is also responsible for the existence of LIZA. You really can’t get more musical than that.

However, the film is more a family drama that just HAPPENS to have two of the most famous songs ever in it. You could removed all three of those numbers and the movie would still be in tack.

It is why it didn’t make my list when their films like An American In Paris, The Band Wagon, Cabin In The Sky, Easter Parade, For Me And My Gal, On The Town, The Pirate, Singin’ In The Rain, A Star Is Born (1954), Summer Stock, and The Wizard of Oz did.

I have been really lax because I want everyone to participate. You’re just gonna have to make a judgement call. If/when we do this list again in a couple of years, I will probably revise the eligibility rules.

Musicals?

Any random Bollywood movies.

Good one's? Almost any random 90s hit movie. Trust me, in 90s decades, movies being hit had a big part to play by music. So if a big Bollywood's movie is hit in 90s, chances are it'll have a good album at very least.

Thank you!

As the title says, I've moved the hard deadline to basically any time on Tuesday.  The truth is I write really slowly. With the busy season upon us, I want to give myself enough time to get all the write-ups finished.  So when I started the Countdown on CATS OW, we'll get through all 50 of them.  Because of that, I am open to accepting lists late since I now have enough information to start the write-ups even if/when the lists evolve.  Just drop me a note that it's coming late.

And I know I said I was only going to God Warrior The Music Man, but if you're at like 14 and you need just one more, might I suggest like, Singin' in The Rain, or The Wizard of Oz, or Fiddler On The Roof, or The Sound of Music.  🤷‍♀️  Just FYC.

Hocus Pocus has one song in it?

two songs, only one musical number. Does not count. It has the distinct honor of falling into the 101 dalmatians category: has the best music, not a musical.
