BOT’s Top 50 Movie Musicals

tumblr_nei75yGoyN1skiltjo2_500.gif

The forums are alive with the sound of music.  With songs they have sung for ninety-two years since a musical, Warner Brother’s 1927 The Jazz Singer, became the first Hollywood film with sync’d sound.

As we merrily rolled along, we’ve visited cabarets on the way to the forum, sung about all that jazz on some enchanted evening, danced el tango del Roxanne as an American in Paris, and eased on down the yellow brick road, all to this moment:

In honor of the MEMORIES (and the death of the Movie Musical until Our Lord And Savior Arrives June 2020), I got the go ahead to Emcee List of The Top 50 Movie Musicals.

Eligibility

All films released up to November 20, 2019 will be eligible.

I will not be restricting adaptations. Want to put all three versions of Annie on your list? Awesome.

I’m defining Musicals as:

  • Character sings and/or dances in scene;
  • The songs and/or choreography are a significant part of the film;
  • The musical numbers are essential to the character’s emotional development and/or plot progression of the story/media.

The best way to think about it is this: Mel Brook's 1967 The Producers is not a Movie Musicals.  The 2005 movie, based on the Broadway Musical, based on the 1967 movie, IS.

A detailed breakdown:

Not Eligible:

  • Movies with ONE iconic song/number (i.e.: Slumdog Millionaire, Captain America: The First Avenger)
  • Movies with amazing soundtracks (i.e. Pulp Fiction, Almost Famous)
  • Concert Films and Documentaries (i.e. U2’s Rattle and Hum, Beyonce’s Homecoming)
  • Concert Films of Musicals (i.e 10th Anniversary Les Mis Dream Cast, 2001’s Sweeney Todd)
  • Filmed staged productions of the musical (i.e. The Cats VHS, 2010’s Company)
  • Filmed Live-To-Tape TV Specials (NBC's Sound of Music, FOX's Grease)
  • MGM's That Entertainment!, Part II, and Part III are disqualified due to them being giant clip shows.

Eligible:

  • Live Action Musicals (i.e. The Sound of Music, The Wizard of Oz)
  • Animated Musicals (i.e The Little Mermaid or South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut)
  • Jutebox Musicals (i.e. Tommy, Across The Universe)
  • Jutebox Musicals Starring Musicians (i.e. A Hard Day’s Night, Purple Rain)
  • Musicals BioPics (i.e. Yankee Doodle Dandy, Funny Girl)
  • Non-Hollywood Musicals (i.e. Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Aashiqui)
  • Feature Length Made-For-TV Movie Musicals (i.e. Brandy's Cinderella, High School Musical)

I polled several users about that last one.  Votes came back 4 Yes, 4 No, 1 It Doesn't Matter.  We also had a long conversation about whether or not to include musician biopics that don't technically follow musical rules.

It was [a very sage friend who's like 'sure blame me' when I suggested I give them credit] that made the most compelling comment: it's a community list.  So in that spirit: we're going to let all musicals in and let the votes make the ultimate call.

If y'all want to form a coalition and power rank 2003's Music Man with Matthew Broderick as The Best Musical Ever, I love it.  If y'all want to hold a revival to evangelize for the next two months that 2003's Music Man with Matthew Broderick is the worst musical of all time, I love it.  Just send me a list and I'll count it.  I'm so beyond excited.  Let's have a gay old time this holiday season as we celebrate fifty amazing musicals and mock Cats.

I'm gonna be honest: the BEST resource to brush up on your Shakespeare Musicals is YouTube.  Channels like Fandango's MovieClips, DisneyMusicVevo, and WarnerAchive have tons and tons of clips.  Individual Star Channels like Rodgers & Hammerstein or a quick search of "Judy Garland" are rabbit holes of goodness.

While prepping for this list, I assembled two playlists (A-L) and (M-Z) featuring about a hundred or so musicals.  Most musicals have three videos.  If you click the three bars in the corner, you can scroll through.  They are in ABC order.

This is not an official list.  This is not MY list.  This is not a comprehensive list (I know, I know, stuff's missing).  It is simply... "a very good place to start."  I mostly pulled Musicals that I thought had the best HQ videos.

There are also a couple of musicals in Public Domain!  Here are some that are on YouTube.

If you can get past the TCM.com paywall (aka, have a cable sub or a friend's cable sub), here is their schedule for October.  These are when the movies air, and then they are normally available on TCM.com for another 5 days.

November 1: Having A Wild Weekend (1965)

November 5: Fashions of 1934 (1934)

November 7: On The Town (1949)

November 10: The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964)

November 13: The Red Shoes (1948)

November 14: Broadway Gondolier (1935), Dames (1934), Irene (1940)

November 17: Du Barry Was A Lady (1943)

November 18: On The Town (1949), No Leave, No Leave (1946), The Stork Club (1945)

November 20: Cabaret (1972)

November 21: The Glass Slipper (1955)

November 22: A Hard Day’s Night (1964)

November 24: Annie Get Your Gun (1950)

@captainwondyful

I know you have the eligible list up, but what about movies like Walk the Line or Bohemian Rhapsody? They may not technically be musicals in the sense of certain other films, or even other biopics like Rocketman, but those movies still feature multiple scenes of music and singing and dancing on stage. Do they count?

That is legit what we had the three week discussion on, and why ultimately I decided to let everything in and see where it falls.

Personally, I don't think Walk The Line, Ray, Straight Outta Compton, Bohemian Rhapsody, etc are musicals.  Musician Biopics tend to follow their own rules, even if they're movies with music.  Those films are structured that even if you take out the songs/numbers out, the movie still basically holds up.  They'd be a lot more boring, but the plot would still be there.  That's why I think Rocketman is a musical.  It's structured as classic jutebox musical, and it'd be a very different film without the fantasy sequences.

That. All. Said.

This is just my opinion.

I've chosen not to disqualify them.  If folks want to put 'em on, I'll count them.

Yes

Musicals BioPics (i.e. Yankee Doodle Dandy, Funny Girl)

Yankee Doodle Dandy's musical numbers are stage numbers

I have 90 movies on my current list and I've yet to watch a few Bollywood musicals I want to get to.  I hate pruning. :sadno:

Tehehe.  This is it's Fifty.  Cause 100 Seemed like "Let them all in", 25 seemed too restrictive, and 50 felt like "just enough that something's gonna miss and @Jake Gittes's gonna scream at us about TASTE."

I might have write up a post about why Bohemian Rhapsody is a good movie.  We have to make sacrifices for the good for the community!
