A highly effective portrait of the life of Judy Garland. I liked that this mainly kept things focused on her final days while providing enough glimpses of her childhood that show us how the Hollywood system would sadly end up shaping the adulthood of the girl everyone knew as Dorothy Gale. It's a little too packaged at times, but this is an above average biopic that avoids cheesiness and humanizes the icon. A large part portion of the credit belongs to the astounding performance from Renee Zellweger as Garland. She does all of her own singing in addition to transforming her appearance to resemble Judy and perfectly conveys all of her mannerisms, to the point where it's easy to forget you're watching a performance and not the real person. The other actors all do fine (including the always reliable Finn Wittrock as Judy's fifth and final husband Mickey Deans), but everyone mainly exists in Zellweger's orbit. Her final performance of "Over the Rainbow" is haunting and will likely seal the deal for her second Oscar early next year. Even those usually averse to cookie cutter biopics are likely to find this to be an engaging experience that'll stick long after it's over on the strength of its lead performance alone. B+

renee's good the movie's kinda boring. i liked the musical performances (the last over the rainbow performance is the only great scene in the movie) and the flashbacks (which surprised me the flashback parts are usually the worst part of movies like this but i thought the filmmaking was a little more interesting and impressionistic in those sections). everything in between those parts... pretty flat. renee's doing a lot to carry the whole thing on her back but even she couldn't save me from zoning out a couple times.
