Again, nostalgia is a hell of a drug. The first 90s movie was huge back in the day (adjusts to almost 245M), and the kids who saw it now have kids of their own. Also helps, at least here in the States, the first movie and Family Values air every year on cable in October, so the property gets new fans every year.

Welcome to a world where only things people recognize make money

The movie looked so so cheap that I thought even nostalgia couldn't save it.

This is an insane OS performance. It had 152 OS ow and in the following 7 days has added ~199 more.

If it adds 200 more in rest of the run OS (same as last week) and 130 more Dom (for low-320s finish), will get to 544 + 200 + 130 = 874 ww

It's also a fun concept with lovable characters. The brand has value. They should have done it justice.

Also, Addams Family Values > Addams Family

Still a shame Abominable opened so low. Between It 2 and Maleficent 2 we could have had 7 consecutive weeks of a 30M+ opener, which would have been insane. Still mad impressive, but we were on the verge of greatness. Ah well

Yeah. 900s finish looks likely. Not even gas to get to 1B which would have been crazy. Definitely one of the least expected Billies

So are $4 tickets...every non-Disney kid movie that went the discount route overperformed this year...and the ones that didn't, well, didn't...

See Abominable vs Addams Family for the latest example...having seen Addams Family, I'm sure Abonimable is better, but not better enough for me to spend full price for that vs sale price for AF...

PS - The great spring example was Wonder Park vs Missing Link...

Aquaman is better than a lot superhero movies.  Most of these aren't reinventing the wheel.  Black Panther,  Thor, Aquaman all have very similar plots and it's a plot that predates most forms of entertainment.

Wan brought a vision to his that is far superior to most. Its visually stunning.

Don't know why people are surprised by Joker's performance. Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman and Aquaman were all big commercial hits. DC characters are way more popular with audiences than people here admit. If WB continues to hire the right filmmakers who understand what connects with the DC audience they'll make money. Trying to have a MCU movie with Justice League and Shazam was a big mistake, and they're repeating it with the Suicide Squad sequel, but at least they continue to be diverse and Birds of Prey and Wonder Woman 1984 seem to be faithful to the DC spirit.

Because it's a bleak drama with no action that feels more like Christine (drama with Rebecca Hall, not the Stephen King movie) than a comic book blockbuster.

ps ww and aquaman both were like mcu movies same goes with shazam , as for justice it tried to hard the secret of mcu mighty success is not the tone of their films

Try to produce a 55m mid-budget without single scene of CGI fight and zero visual effect spectacle, with highly stylished disturbing imagery non-stop for 2 hours.,

This is financially risky even for DC brand which clearly losing its ground to MCU in the past decade. The opening may not a surprise but subsequent strong hold is what make people shocked because SH genre don't hold that well, and a psyco-drama don't gross that much.

If you ignore the quality of the storytelling, sure. It has a great third act that takes it from mediocre to good but that's largely due to spectacle.
