In a better world, original films like this would get a proper marketing campaign to show the GA why this movie could be interesting for them and worth their money. In that world, filmmakers that want to make something new that is not based on any existing IP or brand name would get rewarded first by the studio and maybe later even by the audiences for the risk of making an original film.

However we live in a shit world where studios dump everything that isnt an established franchise and those filmmakers cry in the corner.

It truly comes down to test screenings which are a very flawed metric. Studios don't necessarily have issues funding original films but if they show indication of not performing with general audiences, thats where the panic kicks in from studios. Look at this situation. Huge funding for an acclaimed director. Test screenings that maybe showed some inaccessibility. Immediate dump job (no festival premiere, no promo)

Theaters are the best form of marketing and I've seen trailers there plenty of times. People don't watch network TV so ads there aren't going to do much. Internet marketing has come a long way, but the results are mixed at best.

I'll say this though. It's pretty weird how historical epics went from being near-guaranteed money at the box office in the 90s and early 00s to basically box office poison in the span of a single decade.

Historical epics go up and down. They were really big in the 50's and 60's, and then  suffered a collapse in the 70's kand 80's and made a comback in the 90's. It goes in cycles.
