Heading into the launch session, the industry was seeing a $115M-$125M overseas start for the Angelina Jolie sequel. The result is above the original’s 2014 opening of $109M in like-for-like markets and at today’s rates — just a roughly 7% bump...

As we noted in our global preview, the first Maleficent finaled at $517M abroad, although translated to today that would be about $380M given currency swings in the intervening period. (That movie also had benefited from counter programming agains the soccer World Cup.)

I watched it on Friday and thought it was just fine. But apparently it's getting very good word of mouth in Brazil because everyone seems to love it.

Will be interesting what it's going to do in the next few weeks.

seems to have good reception in india too. critics and audience. but started small and has just 1 week before a biggi takes way all screens so will do maximum $1.5-2m.

The USD was very weak until the latter half of 2014 (when it started strengthening) due to a variety of factors, including extremely low interest rates and money printing by the Fed. Since then the Fed hasn't been as aggressive about keeping a lid on the currency (others increased their easing measures as well though).
