How much do you think the strikes may affect things?

It may affect that particular indicator actually. The strike benefits local and indie theaters, most of which are not showing SW. Most subways are closed but the biggest lines are still open, between 6-9 AM and 4-7 PM. So people are more likely to go to an 9 AM and especially to a 5 PM showing rather than going before 2PM.

Without the strike it would be much closer to TLJ, but it probably would't have passed it anyway.

Early ratings are not so good.

they are not actually competing, China is so cold now that the overall box office is pretty dim; and if a film can light up the box office then every film wins. Why must you assume it is a zero sum game?

but if we want to do it your way:

IpMan4 is not a presales heavy movie; it’s a walk-up heavy movie.

And also both of them have different release dates, SW is opening on Thurs, with sneak previews on Wed. IpMan4 is on Fri.

So far Fri Presales, IpMan4 is 3x of SW. (again, SW is not opening on Fri)

i think SW should be more concerned about the immediate threat which is The Sheep without the Shepherd which has opened this week has strong WoM and could kill SW’s momentum even on its Wednesday’s sneak previews.

As expected - the immediate threat; Sheep without Shepherd, which has been out for 6 days, will beat TROS’s opening day.

Aproximately 380k admissions Yesterday in France. It is really underwhelming.

French Opening Day:

TFA: 619 020

TLJ: 503 727

TROS: 380 000 (-25% / TLJ       -39%/TFA)

Worst OD for the franchise since SW6 in 1983.

3 of the Europe Big 5 are down. If UK follow same pace, perhaps 20-25mn OW.

Germany -30% TLJ

France -25% TLJ

Italy -10% TLJ

So far $10.2mn from 4 markets. I wonder If I shall make a sheet or let it go.

Wait, where are the official numbers?

What was the opening day for Joker in France?

So those are percentage drops from TLJ to TROS? So for example, its opening day is -30% less than the TLJ's in Germany?

You've heard it here first: I'm not going to be surprised if Joker ends up making more than The Rise of Skywalker worldwide - not to mention that Joker recently surpassed The Last Jedi's international total (which I don't see TROS beating) ~

20% drops means it will be lower than Joker, 25% drop means lower than 1B.

Wow lower than Joker in Germany?! WOOWOW ~

I'm sure what Joker's opening was in Germany, France and Italy?

I think in Germany its opening day was 240/310k (including previews)

Thanks ❤️

So Jokers is lower 😛 EP9 didn't have previews so it's 240k vs 300k

Woah interesting ~ I'm still reading into this but whoops those numbers was meant to be for France - Joker did 240/310k in France including previews I meant sorry haha ~ Joker had an OD of 140k (€1,3M) and 100k in Wednesday previews ~

But for Joker's opening day in Italy it took €1.232.535, compared to TROS's 1,136M€, so it may have beaten its opening day ~

Seems it will land between TLJ and RO overseas. I think $620 mln is in play, no more.

That means The Rise of Skywalker probably won't touch Joker's international box office number, which is the 28th highest of all time:

6. Star Wars: The Force Awakens $1.1 billion

27. Spider-Man: Far From Home $741 million

28. Joker $727 million

31. Star Wars: The Last Jedi $712 million

87. Rogue One $523 million

Star Wars: TROS - 1st day in France - 392 483 admissions (including 1200 previews admissions) = €3.1M or $3.5M

Top Star Wars - 1st day in France (in admissions)

1. Revenge of the Sith : 641 799

2. The Force Awakens : 619 200

3. The Last Jedi : 503 727 (-18.65% vs TFA)

4. Attack of the Clones : 453 203

5. The Phantom Menace : 450 531

6. The Rise of Skywalker : 392 483 (-22.08% vs TLJ / -36.60% vs TFA)

7. Rogue One : 271 502

I always like using Joker as a comparison, as I really feel it'll showcase how amazing it was - and is, even more so - after these numbers.

Joker in its 1st day in France had 291,192 admissions (including 81,000 previews).

Bearing in mind the restrictions in the cinema, that's really terrible for TROS, or simply that Joker had a really amazing turnout. I'm just curious whether TROS will fall greater in its second-weekend, as Joker managed a rather strong hold

European performances are lining up pretty similarly? Looking at my market's weekend pre-sales (not disastrous but kind of meh nevertheless) makes me think Finland's performance won't be too dissimilar from the rest of Europe seen so far. Of course, Xmas being just around the corner might deflate the weekend numbers a bit, but still.
