PSA: Box Office Mojo Redesign ... Numbers Saves The Day With Theater Counts

Recommended Posts

I'm angry, I'm livid. I had to learn about this garbage redesign the worst way possible, I actually logged onto the site, and found that it was now incomprehensible to look at. Thank god for the internet archives, because otherwise I'd be...

They need to fix several of the All Time stuff, including months and MPAA ratings because they are very inaccurate.

Here it was on the old redesign:

Quote
RATED G Toy Story 4 $120,908,065
RATED PG The Lion King $191,770,759
RATED PG-13 Avengers: Endgame $357,115,007
RATED R Deadpool $132,434,639

And here it is on the new design:

Quote
R Nasty Baby $8,023
PG-13 The Cookout $5,600,000
PG How to Eat Fried Worms $3,950,000
G/PG How to Eat Fried Worms $3,950,000
G U2 3D $946,000

GWTW original released earned 189m+ of the total 200m+ dom boxoffice. That's 93-94% of all-releases dom for original release.

It sold an estimated 202m tickets. Safe to assume 195m+ tickets (96-97%) were for the original release as later releases had  inflated prices and sold less tickets for the same dollar.

The population in 1939 was just 147.5m according to wiki. So num of tickets for original release were 32% higher than population.

Movie today would do 3.7b dom if it replicated that feat (using TFA as a benchmark)

(Haven't taken into account movie going habits and alternate source of entertainment and other variables so this is too simplistic)

But don't meant to digress. Back to the design discussion:

I think we are overreacting 😛

it's just a website, we get data much earlier and clearer here. Not that Mojo was tracking or whatever, they were reporting studio numbers only. Those asking for franchises thing, don't be lazy

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-grossing_films#Highest-grossing_franchises_and_film_series

if not, there's plenty other sites too

wow mcu is number 1 ,  how so ? good for a little indie studio

is "brands" the new studios page?

it doesn't even have the major studios listed, just their branches and no yearly page..

and so many smaller studios missing (even A24 :() I can't find a place for the limited releases either.

Which sub header is this under?

Numbers look like just Domestic but I don't see it under there

from main box office tab on IMDb Pro

I found that you can view each studio gross separately by looking up their company info but can't compare % yearly gross with other studios since they don't show up in the same page, I'm sure Disney is still number 1

Woah. That site is serious step down.

Has anyone looked at the show downs. On mobile here. But they are butchered. Can't see data together (daily, total, % changes etc are now a drop down u select which u view 1 at a time!). Even worse showdown is daily online - no weekend or weekly comparison anymore.
