Ezen Baklattan
Okay friends, I got a bit of a confession to make. Spoiler Going into the new year, I'm spending a lot of time thinking about what I want to accomplish, and the thought of turning Notes from the Otherspace into a full length novel is maybe my biggest goal for the new year. I haven't been able to muster the energy for it as much as I realize I needed to, and I need to position myself in the best possible way for it to turn out as well as I need it to. On top of that, I worry that at an impasse with my own involvement in CAYOM. Thinking about the Best Picture win for Paradise Island on top of completing my signature franchise, the one that got me into this iteration of CAYOM in the first place, I've been worried about my own personal motivation. I've made next to no progress on anything Y7 related, and I'm also worrying that I'm setting an impossible standard to myself. This has effected a lot of my own enjoyment of the game (and it's caused me to stress over everything related to it - for that I truly do apologize if I've gone too far or acted unfairly towards others) and I really don't have anyone to blame but myself. I still love writing it, but I've kinda experienced something I was afraid would happen for a while, a feeling of burnout and stress. It's a feeling that I don't want to affect others with. Make no mistake, I'm not quitting CAYOM. I really love you lot, and I truly enjoy creating these stories that I get to share with you. That being said, for my own mental health and to let myself go full steam ahead on the NFTO novel, I am significantly limiting my involvement in filmmaking until further notice. In the immediate future, I will remove all of my films from the Y7 calendar besides The Epsilon Syndicate: Art of the Dream. Films like 1906, Aquarius, and The Gardens Above will not be cancelled but instead delayed to Y8 or later. (Pre-readers of these projects, please forgive me.) I will also still be involved in the review and prediction phase of the year, of course. I just hope that by taking a breather year, I can focus on my novel and feel ready and refreshed to begin again in Y8. (NOTE: I am keeping AotD since a lot of it is outlined already, and I do actively want to keep the franchise going) Honestly, my own engagement with the reaction to AHP kinda spurred a lot of this thought. I set the bar impossibly high for it within my own mind, and I acted maybe a bit overdramatically to certain reviews and shortcomings. Honestly, looking back it kind of scared me how much I forced myself to work on it, and the anxious drive to keep working away at it really did hinder my Y6 output. That's not to say I'm not deeply happy with how it ultimately fared, but it was then that I realized that I was getting so deeply worked up about something that, while I had control over, did not define my abilities either way and I made so much of my own self esteem dependent on hitting a home run that I beat myself up for hitting a triple. This behavior was ridiculous, and it's unfair to all of you. I'm really sorry if I went too far or acted over the top. I don't feel happy to make this decision, but in assessing my own individual priorities, I think this step is vital for my own well-being and focus. I also still want to write these films and, effectively, don't want to half ass them. I also owe you this honesty and transparency upfront. This community has been and still is valuable for me in a way that words can't describe, and I want to be sure I can provide my best self to it. I owe that to all of you. Thank you all so much, and I apologize if this decision comes as a disappointment. 7
