The message was about taking chances with popular IP, not making everything like MCU and F&F. Situation with original mid/big-budget films is a different story.

WB. didn't really take a chance since they already had success with a dark and grim joker and their DCEU has been a mess overall. Also Black Panther was a risk. No one believed that a black cast blockbuster would ever smash that hard.

BP was a bit of a risk but having the MCU name behind it meant it was going to be a hit anyways.

Becoming an all time hit was unexpected.

Same for Joker. People acting like it's shocking it did good. Long range tracking for months was 90m OW. My expectation was 250/650. It destroyed those expectations but 650 would have been a massive sucess too. Just not on this level. Besides End Game and maybe Infinity War it's made more than anything else in a long time.

It's astonishing how little people realised how powerful the Joker IP inherently was.

An absolutely panned film with an absolutely panned version of the character still made an absolute fortune sold on the back of nothing but the Joker, hot topic imagery, and Margot Robbie's bum.

A nice and perfectly decent acting performance has been held up by countless people as OMFGBESTPERFORMANCEEVER for a decade just because it was playing this character.

It's been an amazing achievement, but, seriously, the character was already batting 3 for 3 in insane box office.

Where?

More than a decade ago with completely different movie? I meant creative chances, making something outside the formula. I don't see big IP based movies like Joker around, the fact that WB was so hesitate to greenlight it says everything.

MCU brand can sell anything, especially with Infinity War and Civil War direct connections, Cap Marvel got the same bonuses.
