The 2019 BOFFY Awards - Full Nominations Page 12 | Ballot Deadline February 27th

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, me and @Spaghetti are opening up this year’s BOFFY Awards for nominations a bit earlier this year as we’re changing up the nomination process slightly for a few categories.

First we are introducing the following as new categories for this years BOFFYs:

Best Scene

Best Breakout Filmmaker/Actor

Best Foreign Film

Best Documentary

Best Stunt Ensemble

And Forum “Moment” of the Decade

- For this category, the idea is any thread or overall moment in the forums this decade that were in some way defining (could be in how ridiculous it was, funny, or a more genuine/less tongue in cheek choice)

For the following categories, nomination procedure will remain.  Simply pick ten choices and rank them for each category, the reason we need them ranked is in case of a tie the candidate with the most number 1 votes gets the nom (if those are tied then number 2 votes, etc)

(Rank Top 10 choices)

BEST PICTURE

(Rank 6 Choices)

BEST DIRECTOR

BEST ENSEMBLE

BEST ACTOR

BEST ACTRESS

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

BEST VOICE PERFORMANCE

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY

BEST EDITING

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS

BEST COSTUME DESIGN

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN

BEST HAIR AND MAKEUP DESIGN

BEST SOUND DESIGN

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE

BEST SOUNDTRACK

BEST STUNT ENSEMBLE

BEST COMEDY

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE

WORST FEATURE

MOST EPIC BOX OFFICE RUN

MOST SOUL CRUSHING BOX OFFICE RUN

For the following categories we’re going to be first nominating a short list (of around 10-12) which you can then pick from.  You may submit a ballot of up to 10 unranked choices for the short list for each of these categories.  When submitting the official nomination ballot you’ll choose from the shortlist.

These categories are

BEST BREAKOUT FILMMAKER/ACTOR

BEST ORIGINAL SONG

BEST FOREIGN FEATURE

BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE

BEST OVERLOOKED FEATURE (Film without “serious” awards consideration and made under 25m at the Box Office DOM)

BEST SCENE

BEST HERO

BEST VILLAIN

BEST TV SHOW

FUNNIEST USER

MOST VALUABLE USER

FORUM MOMENT OF THE DECADE

Use this thread to open up FYC, all votes need to be pm’d to me and @Spaghetti.  I’d ask that you don’t submit your official nomination ballot until after the shortlists have been revealed (so think voting currently is open for short list nominations only)

Chris Evans is definitely gonna be in either my best actor or best supporting lineup, or maybe both. I thought he stole the show in Knives Out at several points.

So you're a Boffies voter. You're interested in voting for the Documentary and Foreign Film categories, but aren't sure where to start. I'm sort of in the same position, myself. Chalk it down to passion, but I think it'd be great to have a good amount of users voting in these categories. Thankfully, various internet sources have made great documentary and international films more accessible than ever. So what I've decided to do is compile a list of these types of films, sorted by the streaming/VOD service they are available on. So whether you own Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, or other services, you'll be able to watch a few films for a potential shortlist! I might miss some, so if you know of a film that I don't, feel free to share!

Netflix

Spoiler

Netflix has staked its claim as a premier place for content of all sorts, and their willingness to spotlight various documentaries and international films could logically be seen as proof of that. Netflix brands many of them as "Originals," while small distributors like Well Go USA frequently place some of their most interesting projects onto the service--as they did for films like Burning and The Endless.

Qualifying films include:

Documentary Films

- American Factory (one of the Oscar frontrunners)

The Black Godfather (which spotlights the music industry executive Clarence Avant)

- Echo in the Canyon (minor sleeper hit in theatrical release, which would be great for fans of music)

The Edge of Democracy (about Brazil's divided political landscape)

- Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened (about a poorly-run music festival)

The Great Hack (a tense thriller discussing the 2016 election and the dark web's role in it)

- Knock Down The House (about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez)

- Tell Me Who I Am (engrossing film about two brothers, amnesia, and a dark family secret)

Foreign Films

Atlantics (hot-ticket foreign Oscar contender from Senegal)

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind (the United Kingdom's Oscar submission)

The Burial of Kojo (in which a man is left to die in an abandoned gold mine in Ghana)

Everybody Knows (Asghar Farhadi drama)

Furie (martial-arts film)

I Lost My Body (masterful French animated film)

Let's Dance (a 2019 French film)

Master Z: The Ip Man Legacy (martial arts film that received US theatrical release in 2019)

Shadow (directed by Zhang Yimou with great set design and unique action)

Lionheart (if English-language foreign films count, then this was the disqualified Oscar submission from Nigeria)

By the way. If you're looking for an English-language film to champion for the Best Overlooked Feature category, the Independent Spirit Award multi-nominee Burning Cane, directed by a sixteen year old, is also on Netflix! I'll try to check that one out as well. Also, a Sundance horror film called Sweetheart will be dumped onto Netflix on Christmas day.

Amazon Prime

Spoiler

Amazon's streaming service is in a bit of a strange position. The Oscar films they brand as exclusives aren't usually available for a long time--as was the case for Cold War. But while their prime Foreign candidates Les Miserables and Invisible Life might take a bit of time to actually become available to stream (not just to rent or buy), Amazon still has a few options of its own.

Documentary Films

- Chasing Happiness (about the Jonas Brothers)

One Child Nation (one of the biggest Oscar candidates of the year)

Sharkwater Extinction (about sharks)

Foreign Films

Gully Boy (India's Oscar submission)

Photograph (an Indian film distributed by Amazon Studios)

Oh dear. I know that isn't much... Um... Well, if you like either of The Aeronauts or The Report, I'd definitely consider voting them for Best Overlooked Feature. The Last Black Man in San Francisco is also on Amazon.

Hulu

Spoiler

Hulu is, perhaps surprisingly, one of the best places to find documentaries and foreign films, thanks in parts to the streaming deal between Hulu and film distributor Neon. Don't sleep on the films available here!

Documentary Films

Apollo 11 (re-colorized footage of the Armstrong moon landing)

The Biggest Little Farm (a wholesome documentary about a family farm; its preview was shown in front of my How to Train Your Dragon 3 screening :D)

Cold Case Hammarskjold (available on December 19th; a crime thriller)

Jawline (about the world of digital celebrity)

Meeting Gorbachev (about a former president of the Soviet Union)

Mike Wallace is Here (about the fearsome broadcast journalist)

This One's For The Ladies (be really careful with this one because it's NC-17 type of content)

Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am (about the titular musician)

Raise Hell: The Life and Times of Molly Ivins (about the Texan media mogul)

Honeyland (available Jan. 20th; this would count for foreign as well)

Foreign Films

Monos (not available yet, but will likely be available soon; a Sundance hit)

The Nightingale (if English-language foreign films count, then this is one of the best films of 2019)

Missing Link is on Hulu if you would like another Animation candidate! Overlooked features include BooksmartLittle WoodsFast Color (Dec. 11), Depraved (Dec. 13), Wild Rose (Dec. 16), and The Day Shall Come (Dec. 27).

Kanopy

Spoiler

This is a streaming service that some college students might have free access to, and if that is the case for anyone, I'd like to list some films from Kanopy! This is a streaming service that specializes in art film and educational content. There's a few lesser-known documentaries and a few other foreign films!

Documentary Films

The Apollo (about the NYC theater)

Be Natural (about underrepresented film history figure Alice Guy-Blanche)

Combat Obscura (personal footage of US Marines in the Afghan war zone)

Diego Maradona (about the titular soccer player)

For Sama (Oscar frontrunner about a Syrian mother; I randomly found it flipping through the selections :0)

The Inventor: Out For Blood in Silicon Valley (HBO doc about Silicon Valley issues)

Marriane & Leonard: Words of Love (about musician Leonard Cohen and his Norwegian muse)

Super Size Me 2 (it's about chicken sandwiches this time)

This Changes Everything (about how the #MeToo stuff is *changing everything* in Hollywood)

Wrestle (about how lower class struggles inhibit four high school wrestlers)

Foreign Films

Ash is Purest White (excellent Chinese film)

Long Day's Journey Into Night (excellent Chinese film)

Rafiki (Kenyan LGBT Romance)

Tel Aviv on Fire (Luxembourg's Oscar submission)

The Third Wife (the Independent Spirit awards loved this film; it's a Vietnam/US co-production, so Vietnam chose not to enter it last year or this year, but it has the qualifying theatrical release)

This is Not Berlin (Mexico chose The Chambermaid instead of this, but it still seems good)

A24 films from the earlier half of the year such as High LifeGloria BellSkin, and Under the Silver Lake are also here.

Apple TV+

Spoiler

I don't own this one (I don't own Hulu either), but I'm sure a lot of people have Apple TV+, so I figured I might as well compile a list of what I find for this.

Documentary

The Elephant Queen (family-friendly documentary about elephants)

Um... That might be it. There's also an Overlooked Feature candidate called Hala--a Muslim-American coming of age film.

Google Play (and other on-demand services)

Spoiler

This is kind of the last-resort place to find films, but I'll list some great films that, for some reason or another, won't be available on a streaming service for some time. Many of the films listed above are available in this fashion.

Documentary Films

Aquarela (about the power of water)

David Crosby: Remember My Name (about the musician)

The Game Changers (about meat, protein, and body strength)

Hail Satan? (about the phenomenon of people worshiping you-know-who)

Jay Myself (about an artist who sells his New York home after 40+ years)

Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice (about the musician)

Love, Antosha (not sure what this is about)

Maiden (great film about sailing)

Midnight Traveler (the Afghan director captures the journey he and his family take to flee from their country)

Mosul (Iraqi soldiers mobilize to liberate Baghdad from ISIS fighters)

Pavarotti (about the opera singer)

The Russian Five (about how, in the 80s, the Detroit Red Wings extract five hockey players from the Soviet Union)

Sea of Shadows (they're saving whales in this one)

Time Trial (British documentary about cycling)

[there's probably a lot more than I know of]

Foreign Films

The Divine Fury (Korean horror film; apparently popular)

One Cut of the Dead (Japanese zombie comedy)

Queen of Hearts (Denmark's Oscar submission)

Socrates (excellent Brazilian drama with qualifying US theatrical/VOD release)

Tigers are Not Afraid (Mexican horror film)

Transit (Germany chose a different film, but it's getting precursor noms anyway for a reason)

Yomeddine (Egyptian drama)

[there might be more I don't know about]

Well, I hope this helps some of the voters who want to support a few of the documentary films and foreign films! If I run into a new availability, I'll post it here! And if you're an American moviegoer who haven't seen Parasite yet, don't worry--participating AMC theaters keep playing non-Netflix Best Picture Oscar nominees for a while between the nomination announcement and the final ceremony, so there's an extremely good chance you'll get to see it in theaters if an AMC is nearby!

@The Panda why do certain categories require users to pick from a shortlist rather than directly nominating like in other categories? My memory is fuzzy so correct me if I am wrong but last year these categories were normal (in the sense that there was no obligation to pick from a short list).

And what is the deadline for submitting our nominations for the short list?

And what is the deadline for submitting our nominations for the short list?

The shortlists are new and implemented for one of a few reasons

1. It’s a broad category that ends up having a hard time reaching a consensus 6 (Think, things like Scene or Hero get a vary widespread based on how vague they are).  So it allows us to reach a stronger consensus on some categories that have a harder time reaching it

2. It was a category that often got skipped by voters, likely because they didn’t really know where to start in picking a nom.  For categories such as foreign film, documentary, overlooked, etc. it gives users that aren’t as familiar on those categories an easy list of options to go and watch come time to submit nominations

So it should hopefully encourage high involvement in some of the more niche categories that are still well liked (and encourage users to maybe go and watch more foreign films for example) and it should help condense some of the overly broad categories which could use a shortlist to better reach a consensus (such as Best Scene).

Shortlist noms are due Jan 11th, you arent required to vote for the shortlists to vote for nominations, so if there’s a category you’re not sure if you’ve seen enough to vote on you’re free to wait for the short list to be revealed and then choose from them!

For Your Consideration

Best Overlooked Feature

Best Supporting Actor (Steven Maier)

Image result for a great lamp

A Great Lamp is the best film I saw at the Cucalorus Film Festival! The filmmakers shot the entire 80-minute film for around $450. It feels like a French New Wave type of film, at least to me. They put the film on YouTube for people to watch for free! Here's the link: tinyurl.com/agreatlamp

For Your Consideration

Best Animated Feature

Best Original Song ("Good Night" by Hikaru Utada)

Penguin-Highway-Poster.jpg

Penguin Highway is the debut feature film from Japanese animation studio Studio Colorido. It is an emotionally poignant film that successfully blends usage of 2D and 3D animation. It is a great film for all ages that I highly recommend for serious viewing and discussion!

For Your Consideration

Best Overlooked Feature

Best Hero (Amelia Wren)

Best Original Song ("Home to You" by Sigrid)

p16943353_v_v8_aa.jpg

A thrilling film with breathtaking visuals and exemplary technical prowess, The Aeronauts has been shortchanged by its 'experimental' distribution through Amazon, but it'd be a shame to miss out on this. It's the type of epic that would've been a classic in late 90s or early 00s. I might be wrong on this being underseen, but I reallly want other people to give this a try.
